YOUR WORD IS A LAMP FOR MY FEET

Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path… Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joys of my heart…I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten Your commands.
Psalm 119: 105, 111, 176 (NIV)

For many years, I worked for the United States Department of Defense (DoD). The headquarters building for the department is the Pentagon, located across the Potomac River from Washington, DC, in Arlington, Virginia. While the offices where I worked were not in the Pentagon, I would often need to go to the Pentagon for meetings. Upon arriving at the Pentagon, I often needed to find an office which I had never visited before. Forty thousand people work in the Pentagon, which is the 13th largest office building in the world. Laid end to end, its corridors stretch over 17 miles. The Pentagon has five sides, five concentric rings, is five stories high and has a five acre courtyard in the middle with a snack bar. It is not a place to get lost!

Pentagon office numbers have four components and read like this: 2C127. The first number is the floor, the second number is the ring, then comes the corridor number and room number. With this formula in mind (there are maps everywhere), I would be able to walk directly to the office where the meeting was being held without becoming a “lost sheep.”

The Bible is a guide, just like the Pentagon office number formula. The Word of God contained in scripture provides a light for the path of each life and will lead us back to God when our life goes astray. While St. John’s was impacted by the pandemic, my husband and I found joy in the Bible studies led by Ken Lee and the theology classes conducted on Zoom by Paul Henry. I know of other church members who sought the Word through Pastor Brad’s classes or online offerings by other churches. Those classes were a light to our paths in a period of darkness! Now that we have returned to in person worship and activities, we need to remember our need to follow God’s statutes so we may continue to walk in His Light.

Prayer: Lead us to Your Light, Lord, and continue to guide us by Your Word today, tomorrow and always. Amen.
