Busy, Busy, Busy

But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Luke 10:40-41 NRSV

Life, it seems, can go from calm to crazy in nothing flat! It seems like leisurely, calm August went to crazy, busy September in no time at all. The last few days of summer vacation vanished into the hustle of school, appointments, and other events. Time can slip away from our attention by all the tasks that we need to get done. All too easily, things that should be at the top of our priority list get overlooked by the various tasks that bombard us and seemingly require our urgent attention.

Writing down things that need to be done get done first usually helps me keep tasks on track. Unfortunately, when too many things vie for my attention, it is easier to slip up and forget to write them down. When that happens, the likelihood of failing to complete an important task goes up. Taking a moment to breathe and think helps. But sometimes, I don’t even remember to do that.

Fortunately, we can be open to receive little reminders from the Holy Spirit that help us to be mindful of the tasks that require our greatest attention. Sometimes, that task is to quiet ourselves and to take some time to spend time with the Lord; whether through a quiet moment, a quick prayer, or a longer amount of time resting in His Word. All of these help us every time.

Father God, the busyness of this world draws our attention to a multitude of tasks every day. We can feel overwhelmed at times. Help us to remember that time spent with you enables us to rest, refresh and refocus; such that we can be blessed by our time with you and be ready to handle the tasks we need to do. Amen.
