LOVE
This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the means by which our sins are forgiven. I John 4:10
Back in August of 2018, I wrote this poem in free verse. Having just celebrated Valentine’s Day, I thought it might be appropriate to share today.
“There hasn’t been a day I did not love you.”
Is this the voice of God?
Does God let us know how deep, how vast, how astounding is that love?
Yes, I believe it’s true.
There are moments when we see the sun rise in the morning,
Or feel the spray and hear the power of the ocean,
When the lightning brightens a dark sky and then the rainbow comes,
Then I think we may get a glimpse of God’s amazing love.
When we hear a special voice or see an engaging smile,
When we feel our hearts beat faster for someone so special, so lovable
That then we think that maybe we know a little of God’s love for us.
But our love is imperfect.
We make mistakes.
We love the wrong way or we fail the one we say we love.
Our love swells and fades, comes and goes like the tides.
God sings to us and in our ears we catch the rapture of the music.
In that moment we know the amazing, steadfast, abounding love of God.
We see our child for the first time and feel that no one could ever love like that.
We know that there will never be a day that we will not love that child.
Is God’s love like that?
God’s love is even more.
So as I face the days that lead to final rest, I think more about that God of Love.
That love so amazing; that love willing to sacrifice all for me, for you, for all of us.
And somehow, though completely undeserving, I know that God will meet me and say,
“There was never a day I did not love you.”
Dear Lord, we know your love is so great we cannot fully understand it. Help us to love you, to feed your sheep, to be your hands and feet in this world of need. Show us the way to show your love. In Jesus, the personification of your love, we pray.
