JESUS LOVES ME

I give you a new commandment: Love each other.

Just as I have loved you,

so you also must love each other. John 13:34

As a child, I learned to sing “Jesus loves me. This I know, for the Bible tells me so.” From the time I was in my first Sunday School class, I had that image of Jesus, surrounded by little children. In my mind, I thought he was telling them Bible stories and helping them feel safe and cared for. I also learned that “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world.” That had to do with Jesus who loved all the kids no mater what they looked like, sounded like, or what they did.  I learned another song too. “I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me. I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves even me.” I am pretty sure that many of you reading this can hear the songs playing in your head.

As a child, the “even me” part had to do with being small. It also had to do with the “stay out of the way,” or “not talking too much,” that’s because I was a little kid in a big people’s world. But as I got older the “even me,” had more to do with how bad I messed up or if I failed a test or didn’t have many friends. Now the “even me,” has more to do with being the “older generation.” We aren’t tech-savvy or move as fast as we used to. Our challenges have more to do with doctors we see and keeping track of a schedule of everything from medication to physical therapy. 

No matter where we are or what we’re doing –  what contributions we can make to the world, we know one thing for sure: Jesus loves you and me. Jesus loves every child of God, whether they’re eight or eighty. That’s a truth we can count on forever.



Jesus, I give you my heart. I give you every word I speak and every action that shows your love to the world around me. Please guide me through those words and actions so that everyone I meet will know how much you love them. Bless all the dear children in your tender care. And fit us for heaven to live with you there. Amen.
