What is the purpose?

Josiah also got rid of the mediums and psychics, the household gods, the idols, and every other kind of detestable practice, both in Jerusalem and throughout the land of Judah. He did this in obedience to the laws written in the scroll that Hilkiah the priest found in the Lord’s Temple. Never before had there been a king like Josiah, who turned to the Lord with all his heart and soul and strength, obeying all the laws of Moses. And there has never been a king like him since.

Lent is often viewed as a time of prayer and fasting. Fasting can be difficult, especially if you have a particularly busy schedule and catch bites to eat whenever you can. But what is the purpose of fasting? Here are some answers. Your prayers become stronger when combined with fasting as you physically demonstrate your commitment to God. Fasting helps you meditate on the word of God and helps strengthen you spiritually. And, fasting helps us focus on our spiritual lives over our physical lives.

There are other ways to fast besides not eating or drinking for periods of time. How about fasting from technology? Take some time away from your phone, TV or computer and read Scripture or a devotional followed by meditating on what you just read. Take some time to think about other distractions you can fast from and use that time in a godly way. Take some time to get creative about spending time with God. Surely, He will bless your efforts.

Precious Lord, we live in a world filled with many distractions and temptations. Help us to turn to you every day for the strength we need to stay focused on you. Amen.
