HURRY
“O Lord, I am calling to you. Please hurry! Listen when I cry to you for help!”
Psalm 141:1
“Lord, you are mine! I promise to obey your words! I want your blessings. Be merciful as you promised. I pondered the direction of my life, and I turned to follow your laws. I will hurry, without delay, to obey your commands.”
Psalm 119:57-60
The list of things that needed to get done kept getting longer and longer! Has that ever happened to you? And it seems that the more we hurry, the harder it is to get things done; or done well.
In Psalm 141:1, the cry from people of all time periods, is asking God to be in a hurry to help us. We have difficulty enduring the trials in our lives and sense the need to receive help as quickly as possible.
Yet, in Psalm 119:57-60, there is a completely different kind of hurry – a hurry to obey God. So, often, we are in a hurry to do “things” that we seldom have time to consider the possibility that we should feel a sense of hurry towards God. Usually, we need to slow down and quiet ourselves when we go to God in prayer or Bible study or worship.
This must be a different kind of hurry. Instead of a momentary sensation, this kind of hurry is an ongoing sense of always putting God first. If obeying God always has a sense of urgency within us, then it’s likely to make it to the top of the To Do list every day. When God makes it to the top of the list, everything else seems to have a much better chance of falling into place.
Dear Lord,
We live in a very fast-paced world, where it seems like, everyone and everything needs our immediate attention. Help us to prioritize the demands of our days by always putting You first. Amen
