THE POWER OF “YET”

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

                                            Philippians 4:6

Recently my daughter, who is a third-grade teacher in Maryland, was observed by her principal during the first week of school. The principal was in her room for a very short period of time, but long enough to leave a glowing comment with her about what she had observed. Her note said that she was really impressed with “the power of yet”, wanted to know more about it and couldn’t believe how captivated her students were.

The “power of yet” is about having a growth mindset. It is rooted in how you approach your inability to do something. How many times have we heard others say, I can’t do this……., I don’t know!.......I’m not good at this……., I don’t get this!....... A simple way to start changing your mindset is by the use of one tiny little word…….yet. In essence, the word means a realization that some things take time, are worth waiting for, and take a bit more work. I can’t do this yet…………..I don’t know yet………….I’m not good at this yet………….It isn’t always easy, but the power of this small word allows for success.

I immediately found myself thinking about what some might call unanswered prayer. What would happen if we said that our prayer(s) hadn’t been answered yet? If we continued to use the power of that little word would our prayer life be affected? Would it help us become a prayer warrior? Would it help usher us into the PGA? Prayer Giants Association?  Would it help to change our mindset?

It might help us to look at things through a different lens. We might see an answer that we missed. We might feel ourselves being pulled in a different direction that provides a more effective answer than the one we asked for.

God hears all.  Have you considered trying it yet?

Heavenly Father, You are good. Help us to remember that Your time is often not our time.  Also remind us that answers don’t always come immediately………..at least not yet. In the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen.
