NORMAL

(Jesus said,) “I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” John 13:15

Will life ever get back to normal? That is a question that probable gets asked a lot these days.

The dictionary defines normal as, “conforming to the standard or the common type; regular, natural; or serving to fix a standard.” The word normal is not in the Bible; neither is the word regular. In addition, what is normal or regular for one person may not be normal or regular for another person. So, how do we determine what normal is?

There are clues in the dictionary definitions – “Conforming to the standard” and “serving to fix a standard.” A standard, according to the dictionary, is “something considered by an authority or by general consent as a basis of comparison, an approved model” or “anything, as a rule or principle, that is used as a basis for judgement.”

The best standard given to us on how to live our lives is the life of Jesus Christ. The standard of God’s love for us is unsurpassed in all of human history – unsurpassed in all time.

Precious Lord,

Thank you that being normal is something about which we need never be concerned. You gave us an example; a standard by which to live. You gave us yourself as the perfect standard. Any time we want to know if our lives are “normal,” all we need to do is to compare ourselves to the standard that you have set for us. Amen.
