RAINBOWS
God said: “I set My rainbow in the cloud…
and I will remember My covenant which is between
Me and you and every living creature of all flesh;
The waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
Genesis 9:13, 15
Don’t you just love rainbows? I know I do! Seeing a rainbow just fills me with awe and amazement! I know there’s a scientific explanation behind rainbows, but I’ve always stuck to the explanation in the Bible. God set the rainbow in the clouds as a sign of the covenant between Him and man. To me rainbows are a signal that God is present and He cares for us. They are symbols of rest for the weary, for the broken and the disheartened.
A few years ago (when I was still living in West Virginia) I was driving to the store and I happened to look in my rear view mirror and saw the most beautiful rainbow. The end of the rainbow seemed to splash onto the pavement behind me. It was so close that I thought maybe I could run back and grab that pot of gold! But, then I thought -- Rainbows ARE the pots of gold, shining with God’s love. And that is priceless.
I’m sure my amazement must have been small compared to what Noah must have felt when he saw the first rainbow. After all of his work building the ark, then corralling the animals, feeding them, and cleaning up their messes, I’ll bet Noah was probably moaning, “I just can’t take this anymore, Lord.” (Maybe we’ve been saying that a lot since COVID came on the scene!)
But then, the skies cleared and Noah knew that he and his family could get off of that boat and he could let the animals loose. Can you just imagine his joy when he looked up and saw the symbol of God’s enduring promise – the rainbow!
Loving God, we thank you for rainbows – symbols of your constant care for us. We are so thankful that you have given us this beautiful reminder of your love. We know that with you we can get through anything. Even this pandemic! You are an awesome God! Amen.
