CHRISTIANS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Philippians 1:6
One beautiful summer morning I was standing at the kitchen window soaking in the velvety beauty of our freshly cut lawn and the clear blue sky. God’s creation for sure! As I turned to move from the window, the corner of my eye caught something dart across the lawn. And then a second something followed. I suddenly realized it was my son, age 10, and his best friend on their bikes dragging 4x8 sheets of plywood across the back yard. I watched in amazement as more plywood appeared with seemingly effortless work. As I prepared to ask him what in the world he was doing, he arrived once more on his bike with two double hung windows. Now I began to worry! What is this project-oriented fellow doing? It wasn’t long after the last window arrived that I found out he was going to build a house in the back yard. He had found the building materials in a dumpster located in a development of unfinished homes. His house was under construction for quite a while that summer, but it was complete after two or three coats of mint green paint. Its uniqueness was the fact that he had added the windows at ground level and it was necessary to kneel on the ground to look through them! Thinking about this construction reminded me that we are all works in progress, spiritual construction zones. Just as the way the house was completed in steps, God works on us incrementally. He started a work in our lives and we are constantly under construction. Do you believe the blessings we experience in our lives are given by God to further our construction? I do. Just like the house, a good construction project has a plan for finishing it. Taking time each day to become mindful of our daily events will keep each of us aware of moments of divine intervention in God’s construction plan. One day God will declare each of us a finished project. Until then, keep watching, keep listening, keep learning and never stop praying. God is in our midst. Praise God!
And by the way, today my son Brian builds bridges. God is good. All the time.
Gracious and merciful God, Your plans for us exist. You’ve said so. Help us stay mindful of Your divine interactions and we shall praise Your presence. In the name of Your Son. Jesus the Christ. Amen.
