Tuition Contract Addenda - Signature Required
The Board of Trustees recognizes that SGWS families are being met with unprecedented personal, professional, financial and health-related challenges due to the COVID-19 crisis. We understand that each family's circumstances are unique and different. SGWS families who signed a Parent/Guardian Contract 2020-21 likely did not know the full impact of the pandemic on their lives at that time. Their circumstances may have changed significantly since they committed to enroll their student(s) at Spring Garden. Therefore, the Board has worked through complex decisions balancing the needs of SGWS families and the needs of the school to maintain its long-term health.

In May, we shared that the Board of Trustees voted to rescind the 4% tuition increase which was to be implemented for the 2020-21 school year. A link to the addendum to the original tuition contract with the reduced tuition prices is  herePlease sign and return through email or mail by June 30, 2020.

Two other significant actions were taken at the June 8th Board meeting.  First, the board approved the option for early childhood families to receive a refund for the extended care portion of the day for full day early childhood students during any time distance learning is implemented in the 20-21 school year.  Second, the board approved the option to withdraw your child and opt out of the Parent/Guardian Contract 2020-21 which must be done by June 30, 2020.

Welcome New Third Grade Teacher
It is our pleasure to share with you that Rodney Chapman will be the class teacher for the incoming third grade. Rodney earned their Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Akron where they minored in music. Rodney taught physical education, health, music, and language arts to students of all ages, primarily elementary school students, before joining Spring Garden. They have experience with a multidisciplinary approach to teaching, and are excited to work with this approach in Waldorf education.  Rodney's passion for teaching, experience with social-emotional learning, and advocacy for inclusion of all students in the curriculum make them a welcome addition to our faculty.

Rodney prefers non-gendered titles and the students will call them Coach Chapman.  They are looking forward to attending several Waldorf trainings this summer in preparation for the upcoming school year.

Coach Chapman lives in the North Hill neighborhood of Akron and enjoys cycling, spending time in nature, and taking care of their dog and five chickens.

Summer Work Days and Mowing Help Needed
Summer is here and the grass is growing! We are looking for help with mowing, weeding, and trimming throughout the months of July, August, and September.  Click on the sign-up link to sign-up for two week increments. When you sign up you are responsible for mowing one to two times during that two week period. The hours you spend mowing count towards work day (and service) hours for the 20-21 school year. We have a mower on site and you will be given instructions if you have not previously mowed the grounds.

For those interested in working outdoors and getting a head start on 20-21 service hours, we are also seeking volunteers for the following Work Days:

We are limiting participation and following the safety  guidelines from Mr. Plevrakis  to create a safe working environment for all.

We are thankful for such a supportive and hard-working community and hope you are all having a fantastic summer!

EdChoice Update
The application window for the traditional EdChoice Scholarship will open again July 1st, 2020 and will remain open until June 30th, 2021.  This is a change from previous years. This change was part of Ohio House bill 166 passed in July 2019. Click here for more information from the ODE Ed Choice website.

No decision has been made regarding the opening of the application window for EdChoice Expansion Scholarship.  The ODE is still reviewing the budget and the application numbers from the first application window.  Once a decision has been made, we will be sure to communicate that to our families.   Please feel welcome to contact Amy Hecky at admissions@sgws.org or Tyra Scott at tscott@sgws.org with any questions.
