NATIONAL TACO DAY

NATIONAL DAY CALENDAR HAS OFFICIALLY MOVED NATIONAL TACO DAY TO A TUESDAY!

National Taco Day has officially moved to the first Tuesday in October! Starting on October 1, 2024, this delicious food holiday will now fall on a Tuesday—Taco Tuesday to be exact. This epic announcement is part of a latest milestone in Taco Bell’s ongoing Taco Tuesday journey to move National Taco Day to a Tuesday starting this year!

“For years, we’ve celebrated National Taco Day on October 4th, but it’s always felt like there was a bigger opportunity to align it with something even more special—Taco Tuesday,” said Marlo Anderson, founder of National Day Calendar. “Thanks to Taco Bell's efforts, we’re excited to officially move National Taco Day to the first Tuesday in October, creating the Taco Tuesday of all Taco Tuesdays. National Day Calendar has always thrived on the grassroots support of people who love celebrating these moments, and this change is a perfect example of that. It’s more than just moving a date—it’s about bringing taco lovers together in a bigger way, and we couldn’t be more excited!”

The odds of moving a National Day is a rarity. In fact, it only happened one other time for Checkers and Rally’s on National French Fry Day. In an effort to set things right, Taco Bell worked tirelessly with the powers at be, in this case National Day Calendar, to move National Taco Day to a Tuesday.

The history of tacos predates the arrival of Europeans in Mexico. Anthropological evidence shows the native people living in the lake region of the Valley of Mexico traditionally ate tacos filled with small fish. At the time of the Spanish conquistadors, Bernal Diaz del Castillo, documented the first taco feast enjoyed by Europeans. Hernan Cortes arranged this meal for his captains in Coyocan. It is unclear why the Spanish used the word taco to describe this native food. One suggested origin is the word ataco, meaning stuff or to stuff.

Whether you prefer soft or hard-shelled tortillas, most agree tacos satisfy a snack craving. However, they also make delicious meals. Considering that many are filled with seasoned, lean meats and vegetables, tacos go beyond delicious. Fish tacos and shrimp tacos with grilled seafood add a whole other flavor profile. Ask for grilled chicken and hold the cheese.

We will be watching the Gulf of Mexico later this week for tropical development. Some good news is that it is not a guarantee as the chance still sits at a 50% chance for development by the end of this week. We'll be watching a large area of tropical moisture move north through the middle of the week. This moisture will likely reach the northern Gulf Coast by Thursday. That's when a weak cool front moves in and begins to push the moisture slowly back to the south. With the tropical moisture all trapped in the Gulf we could begin to see multiple areas of low pressure form by this weekend and a depression or tropical storm could begin to form. The steering currents aren't as clear, but right now models have backed off anything significant. While that is a good thing, we still need to monitor closely as more questions remain than answers.

In the open Atlantic Ocean, there are several other storms happening now though they will stay out in the open ocean and bring no impacts to any land areas.

8 AM - 12 PM

Uptown Square

200 Broadway Street at the River

Directions and Parking Tips

The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.

RTA Lines 57, 31, and 32 pass right by market! Click here to view route 57 or click here for route 31/32.

From I-10

From I-10/Pontchartrain Expressway, take the South Carrollton exit. If you're coming from Metairie, the ramp will merge with South Carrollton heading toward the Mississippi River; if driving from Downtown or New Orleans East, turn left at the first traffic signal (Palmetto Street) then right at South Carrollton. Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.

City of New Orleans Announces New Dates to Register to Become Eligible to Participate in Set-Aside Program

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans recently announced the launch of the Set-Aside Program to enhance opportunities for disadvantaged business enterprises (DBEs).  The Set-Aside Program allows the City of New Orleans to allocate up to 25 percent of its contracts for specific procurement of goods, services, and construction work to socially and economically disadvantaged businesses. This initiative ensures that certified DBEs can compete for designated contracts among themselves, rather than against larger or prime contractors.

The Set-Aside Program aims to catalyze long-term growth and energize local businesses through building wealth for minority entrepreneurs and small businesses. The program also levels the playing field for DBE owners who wish to do business with the City of New Orleans, allowing them to have a fair chance.

Currently, there are 2,105 DBEs that have obtained their certification. Information regarding the Set-Aside Program has been disseminated via email to all certified DBEs. However, only a fraction have registered on the City’s BRASS database, the supplier portal that allows vendors to receive solicitations, upload invoices, set up direct deposit, and view and print payment information. The criteria to participate include previous establishment as a certified DBE and BRASS registration through the City's supplier portal.

For assistance with BRASS registration, vendors can call the Bureau of Purchasing at (504) 658-1550. In addition, staff will be on hand to assist City certified DBEs with registering on the BRASS supplier portal on the following dates:

Classical music, including chamber music, was a unifying force for the diverse ethnicities that were part of Louisiana’s earliest days. Louisiana’s rich classical music tradition dates back to the Baroque period (early 1700’s), with classical music performance and education being an integral part of the state’s cultural heritage.

Lyrica Baroque is committed to continuing this New Orleans longstanding tradition of uniting communities through chamber music.

We look forward to seeing you on October 1st!

Jefferson Parish Library

East Bank Regional Library

Duration: 1 hr 30 min

Public

 ·

Katheryn Krotzer Laborde, a professor of English at Xavier University of Louisiana, will discuss her new book, "Flannery O’Connor’s Manhattan," at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 1, at the East Bank Regional Library (4747 W. Napoleon Ave. in Metairie).

This event is free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration.

Laborde says, “Much is made of Flannery O’Connor’s life on the Georgia dairy farm, Andalusia—a rural setting that clearly influenced her writing. But before she lived on that farm, before she showed signs of having lupus, before she became dependent on her mother and then succumbed to the disease at 39, O’Connor lived in the northeast. She stayed at the artists’ colony Yaddo in 1948 and early 1949 and lived in Connecticut with good friends from fall of 1949 through all of 1950. But in between those experiences, and perhaps more importantly, O’Connor lived in Manhattan.”

In her biographies, little is said of O'Connor's time in Gotham. In some sources, this period gets no more than one sentence. But little is said because little has been known. In "Flannery O’Connor’s Manhattan," the author’s goal is to explore New York City from O’Connor’s point of view. To do this, the author consults not just letters (both unpublished and published) and biography, but five personal address books housed in Emory University's Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library. The result is a book of interest to both the O’Connor fan and the O’Connor scholar, not to mention those interested in midcentury Manhattan.

Laborde is a graduate of the University of New Orleans Creative Writing Workshop. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in a variety of journals and websites, including South Writ Large, Poets&Writers, Free State Review, RiverSedge, Xavier Review, Callaloo, noladiaspora, Fresh Yarn, and others. She is the author of two other nonfiction books: "The Story behind the Painting" (Xavier Review Press, 2012) and "Do Not Open" (McFarland, 2010)

NATIONAL HOMEMADE COOKIES DAY

National Homemade Cookies Day is observed annually on October 1. If you are looking for an excuse to bake some homemade cookies, look no further. Package them up and share them with neighbors, co-workers, and friends!

Can you smell them now? Will it be peanut butter, chocolate chip, or snickerdoodle? Whatever the recipe you mix up, enjoying them fresh from the oven with a cold glass of milk and family will make National Homemade Cookies Day even better. Experiment by trying a new recipe or maybe an old one to share fond memories with the next generation.

Cookie Baking Tips

Use these tips to make your next batch of homemade cookies the best batch ever:

  • Most cookie recipes have butter or a fat component. The butter should be soft, but cool, almost room temperature.
  • Cream the butter and sugar together to create a smooth, fluffy mixture, so the sugar isn't grainy.
  • Beat in each egg separately.
  • Use proper measuring cups for the job. Liquid measuring cups are larger than the amount needed, clear with lines for visual confirmation of the amount of liquid, and have a spout for pouring. Dry measuring cups are designed to be filled to the top with the exact amount.
  • Measure your flour correctly. Don't scoop the flour out of the container. It will pack too much into the cup. Use a spoon to lightly sift the flour into the measuring cup, then carefully level the excess off with the edge of a knife.
  • Line metal baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats to prevent the cookies from spreading too far. Or, use a baking stone to have evenly baked cookies every time.

10 things you should never forget when going for a hike

Published on October 1, 2024

Credit: Dominik Jirovský

Nature’s beauty is undeniable, and exploring the great outdoors is a great opportunity to connect with its many wonders. However, heading into the wild without proper preparation can easily become a recipe for disaster. Whether you’re gearing up for a week-long camping trip or a short hike, knowing the basics of survival is essential. And while most of it comes down to careful planning beforehand, here are 10 survival tips that will help keep you safe and ready for whatever challenges nature throws your way!

1Never rely solely on GPS

Credit: Sylwia Bartyzel

Modern technology can be incredibly useful, but in the wild, it’s prone to failure due to battery drain or signal loss. Without outlets to recharge, your devices could leave you stranded. Always carry a physical map and compass as backups, and if you’re unfamiliar with them, take the time to learn basic map navigation—it’s a potentially life-saving skill!

But you don’t need to be an expert to benefit from an old-school paper map. By simply studying the area beforehand and memorizing prominent landmarks, you can vastly improve your orientation during the trip, and significantly reduce the chances of getting lost.

2Always carry a First Aid Kit

Credit: Mathurin NAPOLY / matnapo

While this might seem obvious, it’s important to remember that a first aid kit is an essential part of your gear for any nature excursion. Even though you’re unlikely to need it, not bringing one exposes you to unnecessary risks. The last thing you want is to be caught without one during an emergency, far from help and medical services.

However, not just any first aid kit will do. Basic items like bandages, antiseptic, and tweezers are crucial, but you should also consider the most common injuries or issues you might encounter in the area you’re visiting and customize your kit accordingly. If you’re unsure of what to include or prefer a prepacked kit, opt for a more comprehensive option. Finally, knowing how to use every item in your kit ensures you’re prepared to handle emergencies, ensuring your safety and the safety of those around you.

3Never drink untreated water

Credit: Kieran Osborn

While it might be tempting to drink directly from natural sources, doing so without purification can lead to serious illnesses such as cholera and hepatitis A. Even if the water appears clear and you're far from civilization, it could still harbor harmful bacteria and parasites, either from feces or decaying animals upstream.

If you must drink directly and lack a portable filtration system, choose water from the highest source you can find, and try to trace where it’s coming from. However, it’s best not to take any chances—boiling the water is a simple and effective way to make most sources safe to drink, preventing potential health risks during your trip.

4Check weather reports

Credit: David Schultz

Never underestimate weather conditions when venturing into the wild. Enduring a storm at home, cozy under a sturdy roof, is one thing—but it’s a completely different situation when you’re camping in the woods or hiking in the mountains. In these environments, even a mild storm can become life-threatening if you’re unprepared.

Always check the weather forecast before heading out, but remember that weather is inherently unpredictable, and conditions can change rapidly. Strong winds or snowstorms in mountainous areas can be extremely dangerous, and even in wooded regions, you must watch for falling branches or lightning strikes. To stay safe, assess the expected temperature range and rainfall, and pack clothing and gear that can handle sudden weather changes. If the forecast predicts consistently bad weather during your trip, consider postponing it.

5Know how to start a fire

Credit: Sylwia Bartyzel

Knowing how to start a fire is an essential survival skill in the wild. Whether for warmth, cooking, or signaling, having access to fire is crucial—one of humanity’s oldest and most reliable tools. Fortunately, you don’t need to rely on ancient methods like rubbing sticks or using flint and steel (though it doesn’t hurt to know them); modern tools make fire-starting much easier.

Carry at least two different fire-starting methods—a Bic lighter is a universal favorite, and stormproof matches are another reliable option. Additionally, bring dry tinder in a waterproof bag to help you start a fire even with wet wood. Always make sure to extinguish your fire completely when you’re done, as it can quickly become a danger to both you and the environment.

6Pack enough food

Credit: Les Argonautes

In the wilderness, a warm meal is more than just something to look forward to—it’s the essential fuel you need to survive and keep moving. Even if you plan to catch fish or game for dinner, don’t rely solely on that. Also, resist the temptation to eat local fruits or seeds; it’s easy to misidentify plants, and many can be highly toxic.

Today, pre-packaged hiking meals are affordable and reliable for most situations. Estimate how many meals you’ll need and pack a bit extra. Always bring high-energy, non-perishable foods that can sustain you in an emergency. Nutrient-dense options like nuts, dried fruits, and energy bars are ideal for long treks and unexpected delays.

7Communicate your plans

Credit: Joseph Corl

This is one of the most common mistakes many overconfident hikers make. We can’t stress this enough—always inform someone of your itinerary and expected return time. Let a friend or family member know where you’re going. This way, if something goes wrong, rescuers will have a clear starting point and timeline to locate you.

Additionally, avoid venturing into unfamiliar areas alone. Even if you’re well-prepared, having a partner or friend with you provides extra safety—and it makes the experience more fun. After all, what’s an adventure if you can’t share it with someone you love?

8Bring shelter

Credit: Jesse Gardner

Shelter is essential for protection against the elements and can be crucial for survival. While you might be tempted to leave a heavy tent behind in certain regions or seasons, it’s generally not advisable. Even on sunny days, you’ll need a place to retreat from the sun’s heat. A proper shelter shields you from hypothermia, insects, and other dangers, ensuring a safe and restful night.

Even a basic shelter can make a significant difference—carrying a rope and tarp can be sufficient to keep you dry and protected. Learning to build a shelter from natural materials is also a valuable skill for emergencies, but planning ahead can save you a lot of effort. Whether you’re using a tent, a tarp, or constructing a natural shelter, always choose a safe, level spot away from potential hazards like falling branches or rising water, and set up while there’s still plenty of daylight.

9Bring suitable clothes

Credit: Clay Banks

As any experienced hiker can tell you, layering is key when it comes to clothing in the wilderness. Start with synthetic "moisture-wicking" base layers to keep sweat off your skin, add a couple of insulating layers for warmth, and finish with a waterproof, windproof outer layer to protect against the elements. This system will allow you to adjust your clothing as conditions change, keeping you comfortable and safe at all times.

Footwear is just as crucial. While traditional advice often emphasizes sturdy boots with good ankle support, the effectiveness of these boots in preventing sprains is still debated. Many hikers now opt for trail runners, which are lightweight, flexible, and often more comfortable over long distances. But ultimately, the choice between boots and trail runners depends on the terrain and conditions you’ll encounter. Whichever you choose, make sure your footwear is well broken in and paired with quality socks to prevent blisters and keep your feet in top condition.

10Make your presence known

Credit: Maël BALLAND

In wildlife-rich areas, making noise is a smart strategy to avoid startling animals, which can prevent potentially dangerous encounters. Most animals prefer to steer clear of humans, so announcing your presence can help them avoid you. Bear bells, clapping, or shouting periodically are effective ways to keep wildlife at a safe distance. Some campers also set up trip-wire bear alarms around their campsites to deter any curious visitors.

Additionally, always store your food away from your sleeping area, and keep it tightly sealed to minimize scents that could attract animals. In bear country, although aggressive encounters are quite rare, it’s always wise to carry a last-resort defense like bear spray. Remember, you’re the one in their backyard, and respecting their space and taking precautions ensures that both you and the animals can coexist peacefully.

The Continental Drifters followed their own unique odyssey: forming in Los Angeles in 1991; becoming a sort of pop and indie rock supergroup; relocating to New Orleans; and after numerous lineup changes, disbanding after almost a dozen years.

The band is back in the limelight with the release of several projects. A recently released compilation album, "White Noise & Lightning: The Best of the Continental Drifters," features some previously unreleased material. And there's a new tribute album and a book about the band, "White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story" by musician Sean Kelly, both released Sept. 27.

There's a book release event at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Euclid Records. Kelly will sign books there will be an acoustic performance by veteran Drifters Peter Holsapple, Susan Cowsill, Russ Broussard and Robert Mache. There's also a Q&A session.

Early on, the band was known for a roster of members who had established themselves with other groups. Holsapple was part of the dBs and worked with R.E.M. and Hootie and the Blowfish. Cowsill sang with her family band. Vicki Peterson became famous with The Bangles. Mark Walton played with The Dream Syndicate. Carlo Nuccio, who died in 2022, had performed with Tori Amos and Emmylou Harris. Ray Ganucheau went on to work with Tommy Malone of the Subdudes in Bature Boys.

The tribute album, "We Are All Drifters," features 25 songs from musicians including Marshall Crenshaw, George Porter Jr., Steve Wynn, R.E.M. members Peter Buck and Mike Mills, The Bangles' Debbi Peterson, Rosie Flores, The Iguanas, Mark Bryan of Hootie and the Blowfish and more.

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street

by: OffBeat Staff

The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.

Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.

On October 6, Nickel-A-Dance will host Duke Heitger and The Crescent City Joymakers. Heitger, a classic jazz trumpeter known for his virtuosity, has performed internationally and is a long-standing performer on the Steamboat Natchez. His band is a staple of Nickel-A-Dance and promises a night of spirited traditional jazz.

Next, on October 13, Mark Braud and His Sunday Night All-Stars will take the stage. Braud, part of the musical Brunious and Santiago families, has been a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene since his youth. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many other notable artists. His band will bring a blend of traditional jazz and contemporary flair to the series.

Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.

The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, September 30

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Rougarou Fest Queen Embodies Louisiana Fifolet

The Rougarou Fest is proud to announce Mrs. Courtney Bennett will reign as the 2024 Rougarou Queen.

A native of Morgan City, and a resident of Houma since 1984, Courtney has been active and involved in gymnastics, cheering, dancing, and numerous music and art events in our community. She is the mother of two awesome children, Gavin, age 13, and Laurel, age 6. She has been married for 18 years to the love of her life, Garrett Bennett.

Courtney graduated from Nicholls State University with a degree in early childhood education. With that education and her creative passion, she spent many years working with children at the preschool at her church, with events at SOLA – a local children’s theatre, and as a dancer and instructor at Paddy Danos School of Dance. Because of her realization of her love of makeup and theater, she followed her creative dream and enrolled in cosmetology! Today she’s a hairstylist at Ambiance Salon in Houma.

Continuing her dreams of designing hair and make-up and ALWAYS a fan of dress up and costuming, she became involved in Rougarou Fest with Jonathan Foret. She has been a Rougarou witch for many years dancing the streets with her sister, Megan, and her fellow hairstylist and friend, Danae. She admits that the hours they spent doing witch make-up and costumes are just as fun as the parade. The first time she saw the Rougarou parade, she knew she had to be a part of it. It’s with her fellow witchy sisters, that she haunts the streets of Houma with their German witch dance.

She is very excited and appreciative to be able to take on this creative project and represent the festival as the 2024 Rougarou Queen. She looks forward to working with her longtime friend, Jonathan Foret, and his committee and volunteers. She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy everything the festival represents and has to offer!

Her costume is inspired by the story of the fifolet. In Louisiana folklore, the "fifolet" is a supernatural creature closely related to the "will-o'-the-wisp" found in other cultures. The fifolet is believed to be a type of mischievous spirit or fairy that appears as a glowing light, often seen floating over marshes, swamps, or other eerie, dark places.

Much like the will-o'-the-wisp, the fifolet is said to lead people astray, drawing them into dangerous or confusing situations. It’s often described as a trickster that lures travelers off their paths, playing with their sense of direction and perception. In some tales, encountering a fifolet might mean you're about to face some misfortune or get lost. The lore around fifolets reflects the rich tapestry of Cajun and Creole folklore, blending elements of European, African, and Native American traditions to create unique and localized myths.

The queen would like to thank her hair stylist and makeup artist, Dustin McElroy, and all the stylists at Ambiance Salon for helping make this possible. She would also like to thank Kathy Marmillion for creating her "Rougarou Queen" sash and the staff at Chez Lili Bridal for all of their hard work and support. She appreciates Dristy Foret Photography for beautifully capturing all of the hard work and talent that went into creating the fifolet-inspired queen. Most importantly, she would like to thank her husband and kids, along with all of her family and friends, for their love and support during the preparation to be the Rougarou Queen. And lastly, she thanks Jonathan Foret and the Rougarou Fest for the opportunity!

The Rougarou Fest is a family-friendly festival with a spooky flair that celebrates the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of Southeast Louisiana. It showcases live music, cultural activities, children’s activities, Cajun food, the Krewe Ga Rou parade, and so much more. All proceeds go to the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a nonprofit organization that is revolutionizing how we think, teach and learn about Louisiana’s disappearing coast.

Each year a Rougarou Queen is selected to represent the festival at various events throughout the region. The queen is selected from our large team of volunteers by a committee of festival organizers. This ensures that our queen is aware of the details of our festival since she has been a part of bringing our event to life in previous years.

The Rougarou Queen will reign over the parade at 7PM Saturday, October 19, 2024.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
