Message from the Head of School
|
|
Dear Raiders,
It has been said frequently during this worldwide upheaval, "The worst of times can bring out the best in people."
We have seen that axiom affirmed time and time again within the Jackson Academy and greater Jackson communities. Dedicated teachers have successfully explored alternative teaching methods for which no one could have prepared them. We have seen parents double as effective teachers in a time when their plates are so full with understandable concern about the future. We have seen students rise to the occasion and be bolstered by not only their strong parental and academic preparation, but also by their enduring faith in God. There have been no weak links in this chain, and I have every confidence we will all succeed in this real-life test and be better than ever as a result. I am so proud of all of you and am thankful for the blessing of being a member of the Jackson Academy family.
Sincerely yours,
Jack Milne

Creatives from the JA Community Respond to Coronavirus with Heart and Humor
|
Artistic expression often flourishes at the nexus of creativity and restriction, like a stay-at-home order. During distance learning, JA students and faculty are producing pieces to bring laughter and ease the heartache of this separation from the school community.
In a project that incorporated photo editing education and a humorous approach to art conservation, Susan Ingram’s visual art students equipped famous portraits with protection against the coronavirus.
|
Kerri Sanders’ theatre students directed, starred in, and produced “COVID-19 Survival Videos” in which they showed what a day in their lives is like right now. In the videos the students treat their time at home with humor, but it’s clear they take the situation seriously. As senior Reese Anderson says while describing the importance of spending time outside, “I’d rather be fending off wasps and mosquitoes than fending off a virus.” Several of the students’ videos will be shared on JA’s social media accounts later this week.

“Inspiring each other is such a part of who we are as a school,” said teacher Ann Boswell Carlson. When ninth grade English teacher Jennifer Conway challenged her students to write a free or formal verse poem using several of their vocabulary words, Carlson decided to take the challenge, too. The result was 41 lines of poetry titled
Spring 2020: A Teacher’s Hopeful Lament in which Carlson describes feelings many members of the JA community share in response to the coronavirus pandemic. “After I read the assignment, this just kind of poured out,” Carlson said.

Even the Smallest Ones of Us Are Learning to Put the Needs of Others Before Our Own
Goodness, what a month it has been! I have felt lots of emotions over these past three weeks, as I’m sure you all have as well. Thoughts like “How am I going to work from home with two small children?” are followed right behind with ones about how grateful I am to have this kind of uninterrupted family time, such a rarity in this day and age. This season has made me try to slow down, enjoy time with my family, practice mindfulness and self-care, be more intentional about how we spend money and the businesses we support, and continue to try to be content with our days (emphasis on try!).
It is no secret that I love everything about Jackson Academy: the students, the teachers, the staff, its purpose and mission. It is a wonderful place that I cherish and am so thankful to be a part of as a staff member and as a parent. What this season has reminded me, though, is how strong and connected we all are, beyond just going to school together. I am absolutely blown away by our community that puts the health and safety of one another as its top priority because of the love you all have for JA and for each other!
My three year old loves JA so much, too. It has been really difficult for her to not see her sweet teachers or her bunny friends, and my husband and I are a poor substitute for Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Sheri! As we’ve been trying to create some normalcy for her, we have started to schedule “FaceTime togetherness” with classmates when we can (technology, another blessing during this time!). I overheard those precious K3 kiddos talking about how they missed one another and school, and about how they were staying home because “people are sick, and we don’t want to get more people sick.” It was a wonderful reminder that even the smallest ones of us are learning empathy and are learning to put the needs of others before our own during this time.
Who do you stay at home for? I would love to know and to add them to my own list of people we are praying for while we are away from one another. We stay at home for my husband’s grandmothers, our neighbor Mr. George, and all of those sweet bunny friends and their families in K3. I hope we will all be together again soon, but until then, know that I also choose to stay at home for each and every one of you.
Much Love,
Erin Neely
