A $33 million traffic management system along Interstate 90 in Illinois that will be activated in October is representative of states delving into the fast-approaching world of connected vehicles and ultimately autonomous cars. 

Technology on the toll road, known as the smart corridor, will allow for real-time reports on traffic patterns, alternate routes and speed advisories, and eventually will provide vehicle-to-vehicle communication.
