Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPI) are a simple timing change that gives pedestrians a 3-7 second head start before parallel and turning traffic gets a green light – reducing pedestrian crashes up to 60%.
However, LPIs without Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) put visually disabled pedestrians in danger if the additional LPI crossing time is only communicated visually.
Accessible pedestrian signals communicate the Walk signal audibly and through a vibrotactile arrow button, removing ambiguity and providing blind and visually disabled pedestrians equal access to the benefits of the LPI.
