Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn and Rabbi Michael Friedman

Visiting Israel in Wartime; How Are People Coping?

This Thursday morning (February 29) at our regular weekly meeting, Rabbis Jeremy Wiederhorn of The Commuunity Synagogue and Michael Friedman of Temple Israel join us to share their recent bi-congregational trip to Israel to provide aid and show support.

They will update us on how the group of 21 members assisted with day-to-day help while sending a message of support from our community.

It was a very important mission and much was learned which will be shared this Thursday.

Collectable Club Meets Tomorrow

After a hiatus of several years, the Y's Men Collectable Club gets underway this week under the leadership of Jon Fox. It will meet tomorrow (Wednesday, February 28) at 9:00 am at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

"Bring your collectable baseball or football cards, record albums, cassettes, or whatever you have," Jon says, "and let’s discuss why you have it, what it’s worth, and what you want to do with it. We’ll have fun and help you with ideas on how to sell them."

For additional information, contact Jon Fox at dorothyfox783@gmail.com

New Y's Men Chess Club Meets Wednesday

Several Y's Men have indicated interest in joining a Chess Club, and Y's Man Manny Sousa is hosting the effort to launch this new activity. He's a chess novice who looks forward to having some fun while improving his skill.

The new Chess Club will meet tomorrow (Wednesday, February 28) from 2:00 to 3:30 pm in Room 109 at the Church.

"I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas for how we can make this a great experience for all of us," Manny said. "Please let me know your level of interest - how much time you’d like to spend playing, and your approximate chess skill level (novice, intermediate, expert, or Grand Master). It also would be fun to learn how you got into the game."

A new Y's Men activity called the STEM Club will meet this Friday, March 1, at 10:00 am in Room 110 at the Church.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. The purpose of the Club is to attempt to discuss relevant information regarding recent discoveries and breakthroughs in those fields utilizing the collective knowledge of its members in physics, chemistry, biology and artificial intelligence.

The Club will meet on the first Friday of each month. Topics will be introduced by the members.

Music for Flute and Harp at Library Sunday, March 3

Y's Man Scott Merlis wants the Y's Men to know that Orchestra LUMOS, as part of it's new Small Space Series, will present "After a Dream" on Sunday, March 3 at 2:00 pm at The Westport Library.

The program will feature music for flute and harp, with Harpist Amy Berger and Flutist Elizabeth Mann. The musicians are top notch New York based players, and the program will feature a piece by Brian Keane, who has composed music for numerous PBS documentaries, films and television shows. This world premiere was written for Amy Berger.

Importantly, this concert will help further build the musical bridge between Westport and Orchestra LUMOS (formerly the Stamford Symphony).

For more information, please visit the Westport Library website by clicking here.

Y's Man Jim Marpe and his wife Mary Ellen Marpe will be providing wine!

Travel Group Meets Monday, March 4

The Y’s Men Travel Group will meet at 9:00 am this coming Monday, March 4 in Room 203 at the Church.

All meetings start by talking about one’s recent travel experiences and coming plans.

This week we’re going to do live demonstrations of several phone apps that can help in your travels. These are some of the areas:

  • How to use Google Translate to translate signs and menus
  • How to get a taxi or car service (besides Uber)
  • How to get train tickets
  • How to communicate with restaurants and other contacts
  • How to find a toilet!

We’ll also discuss the importance of using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) for protecting your phone/laptop/tablet.

Additions continue to be made to the Y's Men Travel Reference Doc, located here

For information about the Y’s Men Travel Group, or to be added to the group’s email distribution list, please contact Art Mann, mannart03@gmail.com

Y's Men Classical Music Society Features

Beethoven's Third Symphony at March 5 Meeting

A video of Michael Tilson Thomas guiding us through Beethoven's Third Symphony (the "Eroica") will be featured at the March meeting of the Y's Men Classical Music Society on Tuesday, March 5. It will be held from 2:45 to 4:15 pm in the media room at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

Composed mainly in 1803–1804, the "Eroica" is widely considered a landmark in the transition between the Classic and the Romantic era. It is also often considered to be the first Romantic symphony.

Please contact Ed Bloch at edbloch71@gmail.com to make a reservation to attend.

Jazz Club Continues Its Program

At the VFW Wednesday, March 6

The Jazz Club returns to the VFW on Wednesday, March 6, for an extension of its February program of dancing and vocals from movies and personal appearances by entertainment legends.

The program will start off with Michael Jackson's Billie Jean performance which should have been viewed last month. It is a classic. Following will be Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and Shirley Temple and their famous stairway dance, Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly, and more.

Biographical sketches will be presented before each performance where you will learn such things as whose Super Bowl half time performance had more viewers than the game itself; who, at age 10, had Doris Day in the same dance class; who was the top Pin-up girl for GI's during World War II; who became a US ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslavakia; and more.

Because of the program content and the success of last month's lunch meeting, early reservations are recommended. Contact Jeff Hare at jeffhare@optonline.net if you would like to attend and and tell him the name of your guest. Cost is $25.00 per person paid at the VFW.

Brubeck Brothers Quartet: A Tribute to Dave Brubeck

Will Benefit The Westport Library

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet will pay tribute to Dave Brubeck on Saturday, March 9, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, in a performance that will benefit The Westport Library. The evening will marry musical elegance with irresistible swinging rhythms, offering a jazz experience in an intimate setting that will resonate deep within the soul.

Through captivating visuals and masterful storytelling, they will unveil the extraordinary life of Dave Brubeck, drawing the audience into his genius, innovation, and spirit.

The Brubeck family has been part of this community since the early 1960s.

Get Ready for Summer Tennis

Now is the time to take action if you are interested in participating in Y's Men Summer Tennis.  Many players from last year are expected to return and new players are welcome.

Seven courts have been lined up (Courts One through Five and Courts Eight and Nine) which should accommodate the group most days. Although it is to be determined, play is supposed to start in early May through September on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8:00 am for an hour and a half.  All skill/experience levels are welcome and good matches and games for everyone will be found.

The Town has raised the fee this year for reserving monthly courts from $50.00 per month per court to $150.00 per court. Dewey Loselle, who manages Summer Tennis, has asked everyone interested in playing to pay $200.00 now by clicking the Pay Now button below or by sending a check payable to the Y's Men of Westport/Weston to Y's Men of Westport/Weston, P.O Box 167, Westport, CT 06881-0167.
