MANAGING CHANGE FOR NEW LEADERS
Tuft Associate Gail Luxenberg recently wrote “Managing Big Change: Top Tips for New Executive Directors & CEOs” for Blue Avocado, the online magazine for the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance.

Drawing on her past leadership experience with nonprofits, Luxenberg advises new EDs and CEOs to start with a full calendar to meet, listen, and promote accountability. “Aim to meet with all board members (or at least the executive committee), senior staff, and funders, with the only objective to get to know each of them and why they’re passionate about the work.” Luxenberg cautions that the “mere mention of accountability can result in early departures,” but there will be many more staff members who are excited to have a new leader with clear goals.

Luxenberg also advocates the use of “precision questioning” within the first 60-90 days, which goes beyond asking good questions to “questioning with respect and with judgment until a clear mutual understanding is reached.” Since your findings also will lead to changes, building “layers of support” with your team and with your Board President, in particular, is essential. Solid communications with every stakeholder also will set the stage for your successful leadership.
