Reflections Contest
"Heroes Around Me"

Hero /ˈhirō/: [someone who], in the opinion of others, has special abilities

Last June, we kicked off the Reflections art program by announcing our theme:  Heroes Around Me . We asked our students to think broadly about the definition of “hero”. Heroes live with us – in our minds, hearts, homes and communities. All it takes to identify a hero is: YOU.

If you share our mindset that art can start a conversation, change minds, and even change the world, please encourage your artist to submit their hero masterpiece(s) by  October 29 th . Find the official guidelines and entry form  here

Planning is underway for this year’s program, including participation incentives, student engagement with local artists and prizes. If you have a passion for art (and a couple hours to spare),  tell us ! With you on-board, the possibilities are endless.

Please email  if you are interested in volunteering at morning valet.

Our morning valet volunteers will help the drop-off process run more smoothly and safely for our students and parents.

Thank you in advance for your interest!
Running Club
Anyone and everyone can join the Tulita Running Club! It is free and fun. You can run, walk and chat with friends before school. We offer Running Club on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:30-8:00am. Drop off at the Circle by the Garden and kids can either bring their backpacks up or drop at their classroom.

At the end of the last school year we implemented a new tally system with bar codes and scanners. This streamlines the process and gives the kids more time to run, rather than having to tally sticks. We keep the cards at school, so the kids don’t have to remember to bring them. It is a great way to start the day. There is an article in the NYTimes  here  about a great study on how physical activity is good for children before school and helps them to focus better in the day.

Please sign up  here  on the Tulita Website. We need this information to make a barcode for your child, as well as an email for you in case we have to cancel Running Club due to heat or rain.
Parent Book Club
On January 30, Katie Hurley, author of  The Happy Kid Handbook  and  No More Mean Girls  will be coming to Tulita to speak with students and parents about emotional and social growth in children and how we can best support them. The PTA will host a Book Club to discuss these books. Click here to take a brief survey about the Book Club meeting times.

Thank you!

Caring Connections
Hello Tulita Families,

This year the PTA would like to add a "Caring Connections" section of our newsletter to support family involvement. Our PTA supports the research that shows family involvement as a major factor to student success. One idea is asking yourself to make a conscious commitment to your child(ren) by creating mental pictures when asking them to complete a task.

“Put the blocks away,” becomes “Raphie, place your blocks in the bucket just like this (demonstrate).”

1. Establish eye contact and then state the child’s NAME. (Raphie)
2. Verbalize what you want to see happen. Begin the sentence with a VERB. (place)
3. PAINT a picture of the expected behavior using gesture and visual cues. (just like this demonstration)

We hope you will find these Caring Connections nuggets helpful throughout the year!
