Community News from Lori Cain Real Estate

Greetings!

I know I say this every year, but our biggest obligation in September is to eat. Restaurant Week, benefiting the Community Food Bank is this month, and we have several festivals: Greek, Hispanic, Scottish -- all to prepare us for OctoberFest. Throw in the turkey legs from the Tulsa State Fair beginning September 27th, and we're ALL going to start Weight Watchers in October.

In September, we really make up for the lack of things to do in August. Great concerts, symphonies, plays - opening of the Guthrie Green and Art Crawl in the Brady District - the Tulsa House Beautiful Show, zoo events and more.

Elaine Meek, Chair of "Transit Matters" (local advocacy group for public transportation) is trying to get funding for Tulsa's public transportation needs. Please check out the web site and sign the petition. Quite frankly, Tulsa' transit system leaves a LOT to be desired, so I'm really glad that Elaine is leading this charge. Do what you can to help out please.

Elaine's September update: Tulsa Tranist added buses to 6 routes on Aug. 20 to reduce wait times between buses. The Tulsa City Council increased funding for Tulsa Transit by $442,000 more than the previous fiscal year, making the increase in service possible. Transit Matters, a local advocacy group, intends to ask the city council to provide funding for Sunday bus service next year.  Tulsa is one of the few major metropolitan areas in the US that does not provide Sunday bus service.  Oklahoma City is also in discussions to start Sunday bus service.

Sponsored by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (Holy Trinity), Greek Holiday features a wide variety of activities, dining from a menu full of delicious home-cooked Greek foods, ethnic dancing, shopping for home-made Greek pastries, Greek jewelry and gifts, and imported foods.

Our parishioners and their friends have a great time hosting the festival. Greek Holiday organizers expect 4,000 to 5,000 guests to enjoy the new a la carte food line, which replaces the traditional Greek festival dinner.

The a la carte menu features home-cooked Greek foods--including chargrilled shish kabob, gyros sandwich, Greek salad (with feta cheese and olives), calamari, tiropita (cheese pie), feta cheese, olives, and spanakopita (spinach pie).  You'll want to try the Greek lamb plate--slices of baked lamb on a bed of rice and green beans. See the web site for a complete menu. And, of course, you KNOW we will have baklava and several other HOMEMADE Greek pastries. And wine. And beer. And ouzo.

Time : Sept. 28 at 7 p.m., Sept. 29 at 11 a.m.
Location : Performing Arts Center
Web :www.tulsapac.com
Based on the hilariously popular book, this play begins where the book leaves off with Alexander T. Wolf on trial. Fast-talking independent reporter pig Lillian Magill claims nobody has ever heard Wolf's side of the story, and she is hungry for the truth. The Honorable Prudence Pig, a tough-as-nails judge with a weakness for musical theater, presides over the case. A sharp, smooth-talking lawyer pig named Julia is the prosecuting attorney, and she always gets her way. Wolf is a soulful charmer with a love of gourmet cooking and the fine arts. He takes the stand in his own defense, but it looks as though the piggy world is against him. After all, he is a carnivore to the core, but is he also the victim of a media frame-up? Will Magill get her journalistic glory? GUILTY or NOT GUILTY? When all the witness statements are in, the audience piglets become the jury and determine Wolf's fate! Are YOU afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf? What really happened? YOU decide! This production will be most enjoyed by ages 5 through adult, or grades K-5.

Greek Recipes

to get you in the mood!

Food Greek

Demetrius' Spanakopita
(Greek spinach pie)

Demetrius cooking
Ingredients:

  • 1 bunch fresh spinach
  • 1 bunch green onions
  • 3/4 cup fresh red pepper, diced
  • 6 oz. fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 large garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1/3 uncooked converted rice
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 6 oz. feta cheese, crumbled
  • Selected seasonings of your choice
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut stems off spinach, about 1/3 of the way up. Wash spinach thoroughly and keep moist in a colander. In a large mixing bowl, combine spinach, green onions, red pepper & mushrooms. Whisk olive oil, eggs & garlic until you get a nice, smooth, dressing-like mixture. Season the olive oil/egg mixture to taste and pour over spinach. Add rice & crumbled feta cheese to spinach. Mix all contents well, until spinach leaves are coated.

Spray or grease a square 10-inch Pyrex or Corning-Ware baking dish. Spoon the spinach mixture into the baking dish and cover with foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove cover. Continue baking until spinach is cooked (usually 15-20 more minutes). Remove & cool. Cut into squares for serving as an appetizer or as a vegetable course.

Note: If you are especially fat conscious, you may replace the eggs and feta cheese with an equivalent amount of egg substitute and 8 oz. of large curd, low-fat cottage cheese, respectively.

Lori's note:
This is not the traditional spanakopita recipe made with phyllo dough that you will taste at our festival, but this is an easy recipe and yummy. We've learned that it tastes better if you prepare and refrigerate, then bake it the next day.

Farmers' Markets!

farmers market

Farmers' markets offer shoppers a wide variety of fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and other farm-fresh foods. many markets also have eggs, meats, honey, plants, flowers and hand-crafted items. Some have baked goods, dairy products, nuts, and even live music. Farmers' markets provide family farmers and local food enterprises a reliable place to sell the fruits of their labor directly to the public, keeping those dollars in our local economy. Visit a Green Country farmers' market near your work or home, and get to know your local farmers.

EATING WITH THE SEASONS

Every crop has a season in which it grows and becomes ready for harvest. Some prefer cool temperatures and others need lots of heat. Fruits and vegetables are most flavorful and nutritious when picked at or near their peak ripeness. When shopping at an Oklahoma Grown farmers' market, expect to find an ever changing selection of fruits and vegetables over the course of the season. Experience the thrill of finding and  preparing your old-time favorites and trying something new, each week throughout the year.

How a Bloggin' Realtor benefits Tulsa Home Sellers

Bits & Bytes from the Bloggin' Realtor

One of my advertising tag lines is "Bits & Bytes from the Bloggin' Realtor," but I've never explained how my blogging benefits my real estate clients. I think reference to the word "bytes" tells you that I'm a techno geek, and how does THAT benefit my clients? My tech savvy style benefits Tulsa home sellers and buyers differently, so this post will address Tulsa home sellers only.

My passion for staying on the cutting edge of technology tells my clients that I'm resourceful in finding new and improved ways to best do my job. Whether it's providing prospective Buyers information about my listings via text messages, supplying YouTube videos or QR codes, this Realtor communicates through several mediums to reach the appropriate audience.

Engaging on social network sites provides me with valuable and current industry knowledge.  If there are new incentives offered by Lenders that may help sell your property, wouldn't you want YOUR Realtor to be aware of this information? Connected professionals are more apt to be "in the know."

Google logo
Understanding how home Buyers shop on the Internet for homes enables me to advertise homes to attract those Buyers.  Let's say that the biggest selling point of your Tulsa home for sale is that it's in a particular school district or that it's within walking distance from the Riverparks. If a Buyer googles "Tulsa homes for sale near the Riverparks," YOUR property for sale needs to come up on the first page of Google search results.

No one can achieve those results better than a real estate professional who blogs and understands how to have blog posts indexed by Google.

Not all Tulsa Realtors understand how the internet works.
Let me show you how I will market your home.

I'm not going to bore you with statistics about keyword density or long-tail keywords. What you DO need to understand as a home Seller is that 95% of Buyers are shopping on the internet, and YOUR Realtor needs to promote your listing so that it will be FOUND on the internet.

And that's where the blogging comes in. Mix blogging with exposure on Twitter and Facebook and a variety of other internet sites and your Tulsa home for sale will receive the attention it deserves.

For more information about our home selling services, please visit my web site.   To see how I market my listings, visit a few! Please do call me for an interview: 918-852-5036!
