We can’t come together if we can’t work together. With this in mind, the Tulsa Police Department (“TPD”) will be marching in the 2021 Tulsa Pride parade. In planning this event, Oklahomans for Equality (“OkEq“) seeks to continue moving forward in the spirit of equality, inclusivity and social progress for which Tulsa Pride has become known.

OkEq remains mindful of both historic and current tensions between law enforcement and the LGBTQ+ community. Pride initially began as a response to the police invasion of Stonewall in 1969. While Pride, today, may have morphed into more of a celebration than outright protest, at its roots, these celebrations remind us that the struggle for true equality continues.

Our mission intentionally promotes “intersectional” advocacy, because LGBTQ+ persons also belong to many other communities, many who are also marginalized and prejudiced. Persons of color, particularly transgender persons of color, still remain one of the biggest targets of discrimination and bigotry, not only across the country, but here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We see you and we stand with you. Further, we want to assure you that the decision OkEq makes to move forward does not whitewash the past. We must continue to seek recognition and accountability for hurt and trauma caused.

We do not belive that we can open a door to progress by closing a door to an organization that seeks to meet us where we are. In fact, OkEq and TPD have longer-standing history of collaboration and cooperation than many probably know. By way of example, Toby Jenkins, OkEq’s Executive Director, has provided trainings to the Police Academy for many years, emphasizing elimination of homophobic and transphobic police practices that plague departments across the country. Equal treatment, by law enforcment, of all persons, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc., will only lead to lives saved and make our community a safer and better place to live.

Additionally, statistics have shown us that there are bound to be members of the TPD that also identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community. As these individuals feel safe to live their lives, out and proud, both at home and work, even further equality can be achieved. History has shown us that knowing a member of the LGBTQ+ community, on a personal level, makes people more open minded. We want these officers to know that we have pride in and support you, while also continuing to strive for equal rights for our entire community.

We remain mindful that some within our community may disagree with TPD marching at Pride. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and we respect yours, even here. We remain hopeful that everyone, regardless of their opinions on this subject, whether police or public, whether LGBTQ+ or ally, will continue to help OkEq in its fight for equal rights. We are PROUD to serve you. Happy Pride 2021 Tulsa!

Tulsa Pride will not cancel for rain. However, should there be severe weather, such as tornadoes or thunderstorms, we will delay the parade and entertainment. In case of showers, vendors, please bring tarps to cover your booths, and parade participants, please bring rain gear for line-up. If the parade is delayed, we will wait in Boston Avenue and then line up after things clear up.

Just remember that you can't have a rainbow without some rain!
