Since first being elected in 2017, one of my top priorities for our City has been fostering housing security. Whether it’s ensuring adequate housing stock, protecting tenants from discrimination, or enacting policies to end homelessness, housing security touches all sectors of city life and wellbeing. 2017 marked the first time in our City’s history that our Council discussed housing at our retreat. Since that time, we have developed a Housing Action Plan, helped create and join the Regional Housing Council, and are now poised to take action on rental housing protections. We’ve come a long way in a short time, but there’s still much more to do to address this crisis.

Source Water Protection Week
|
Join us in observing the American Water Works Association Source Water Protection Week, September 25--October 1, 2022.
What is source water?
Source water is a raw, untreated supply of water – typically surface water or groundwater – used for current or potential future drinking water.
Why is source water important?
Water utilities rely on sustainable sources of water that can be treated to provide reliable, high-quality drinking water. Source water protection is a proactive approach to safeguarding, maintaining, or improving the quality and quantity of drinking water sources and their contributing areas.

Fire won't wait. Plan your escape.
|
Tumwater Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, October 9-15, 2022. This year’s campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape”, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.
“Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning. Make sure you have an escape plan and practice it with your family,” said Fire Chief Brian Hurley.
It’s important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Given that every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different.
Here are some key home fire escape planning tips:
- Make sure your plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
- Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected so that when one sounds, they all sound.
- Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
- Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet.
- Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and at night.
