Turkey Trots Fill
Local Calendar
Citing data from Running USA, Runner's World in 2013 wrote that Thanksgiving is the most popular day for road races in the United States, and in the Chicago area, that certainly proves true. At least 17 races will take place in the Chicago area on Thanksgiving Day itself, in addition to several other races on the weekends before and after Thanksgiving.

Local races feature a variety of distances, but many include 5Ks, making them a family-friendly option for runners and walkers alike.

Looking for an area race? Check out the list below:

Pearl Izumi Seeks 2016 Run365 Champions
Apparel and footwear company Pearl Izumi began taking applications last week for its 2016 Run265 Champion ambassador program. The company seeks individuals devoted to the brand of any running ability, according to a press release, who will represent Pearl Izumi's motto "Endure and Enjoy" in their local communities. Ambassadors will host fun runs and demos as well as provide support to local dealers and sales reps.

Pearl Izumi will accept applications for the program through Nov. 30. You can apply online.

Two Triathletes Named Team USA Awards Finalists
The United States Olympic Committee selected world champion triathlete Gwen Jorgensen and local paratriathlon standout Hailey Danisewicz as two of the 2014-15 Team USA Awards finalists.

The Team USA Awards invites fans to weigh in on the results with online voting which goes through tomorrow. Public opinion counts for 50 percent of the outcome, while a panel of Olympic and Paralymic journalists account for the other half of voting. Jorgensen is up against the likes of Serena Williams, while Danisewicz is in the same category as wheelchair marathon champion Tatyana McFadden.

Award winners will be announced Dec. 10 at the Team USA Awards presented by Dow, Best of the Year ceremony at the University of Pennsylvania. The ceremony will air on NBCSN on Dec. 27 from 3-4 p.m. Eastern time.

Boston Marathon Training Program
Coach Mark Buiack invites runners training for Boston 2016 or 2017, attempting to qualify for Boston in 2017 or preparing for a spring full or half marathon to join his Road to Boston training program, which kicks off on Dec. 5 at 9 a.m. at the Morton Arboretum.

The 22-week program includes hill training, a customized daily training plan, weekly emails, seminars, physical therapist access, a pasta dinner, a private bus to the Boston start line in Hopkinton and post-race celebrations both in Boston and Chicago. Buciak has run the past 36 consecutive Boston Marathons.

In addition to the training program, Buciak will host a free seminar at REI in Lincoln Park (1466 N. Halsted) on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. entitled "Running Your Best Boston." Those interested the seminar, kickoff run or both should RSVP at www.theroadtoboston.info.

Harnessing Heart Rate
for Training
Athletes training for endurance sports measure their effort through different means: some with time, some with distance and some with perceived exertion. Others monitor their heart rate to gain a better understanding of the intensity they put into a workout, and while heart rate monitoring has existed for quite some time, in recent years the method has become simpler with the integration of optical monitors into wearables, eliminating the need for chest straps.

Mio was the first to market with optical heart rate monitoring, though many other companies, including Garmin, Adidas, TomTom, FitBit and even Polar, long synonymous with heart rate tracking, have followed suit in some of their products, either using Mio's technology in the case of Garmin, Adidas and TomTom, or a similar concept.
