Message from Tino
Everyone Can Benefit from a Coach
(Tino’s Top 10 Gleanings from five months at TLG):
By Tino Mantella CEO & President Turknett Leadership Group
I feel fortunate to have had an array of diverse job opportunities over the years. I love learning and the TLG environment has provided more than I imagined when I took the job.

Even though, like all of you, I have had many coaches over the years....parents, teachers, and sports coaches, for example; I have never had a formal coach. So, I thought sharing the below observations about formal coaching may be of some benefit to you:
If you want to be great, get a coach!
How do professionals get better at what they do? How do we improve in the face of complexity? Atul Gawande has studied this question with a surgeon's precision. He shares what he's found to be the key: having a good coach to provide a more accurate picture of our reality, to instill positive habits of thinking, and to break our actions down and then help us build them back up again.

"It's not how good you are now; it's how good you're going to be that really matters"
Atul Gawande

"Great example of how to be an effective coach through positions of leadership"

Co-founder & Co-chair Turknett Leadership Group

by Robert Kega & Lisa Laskow Lahey

"Coaching is usually not just about skill development but about getting clients to the next level – about vertical, not horizontal development. This book is one of my favorites for ferreting out the assumptions that are getting in the way."
by Tim Ferris – Eric Schmidt
Nancy Cranford
VP Talent Solutions at TLG

by Michael Bungay Stanier

'I like what Brene' Brown said about this book...It takes courage to ask a question rather than offer up advice, provide an answer or unleash a solution. In this practical and inspiring book, Michael shares seven transformative questions that can make a difference in how we lead and support.''
Kathryn Igou
VP Operations at TLG

by Dr. Tim Urban

"Loving this book! He talks about speaking the 'words of life' into people to lead and motivate. Tim Urban takes the science of how the brain works and puts it into easy to understand examples that can change how you interact with those you lead. Character, heart, integrity...I see these qualities in my own workplace and know this works! "

Josh Turknett
Principal Consultant Neuroscience TLG

"I really enjoyed this interview on the Knowledge Project podcast with Jason Fried. Jason is the founder of Basecamp, a tech company whose growth has been entirely bootstrapped, and whose success has been driven not by focusing on growth above all else, but on creating a really great product, and a company culture people never want to leave. A refreshing alternative to the "bigger is always better" Startup mentality, filled with wisdom that applies well beyond the world of business."
by Jack Hubbard

Jack is also widely known as the "Professor of Bank Prospecting," and respected for being one of banking’s top LinkedIn Social Collaboration experts.

  • Patricia is a classically-trained pianist, cellist, and clarinetist. To help support herself in university and grad school, she played piano for ballet schools, parties, churches, and taught lessons.

  • In her home, everyone is on the tallish side. She is 5’8, and her husband, a former basketball player, is 6’8. Her 5 year old son is even in on the act. He was over 10 pounds when he was born, and has been in the 99th %ile for height his whole life.

  • She loves Christmas music, and have been known to break into Christmas carols at any point during the year.

  • She has had more birthdays than her mom…she was a leap year baby.
