The Power of Thought
The Power of Thought: Why We Should all be Masters of Mindfulness
by Josh Turknett, M.D., TLG Principal Consultant

  • A bride faints while reciting her wedding vows.
  • A comedian vomits in the bathroom minutes before taking the stage in front of 10,000 fans.
  • A hard-driving car salesman is stricken with a heart attack at the age of 51.

What was the cause behind all of these events?
Their Thoughts...
"(Our thoughts) are just as capable of influencing our physiology as a nail through our foot, a drug we ingest, or a virus in our respiratory epithelium."
A Convincing Illusion
From the moment we awake in the morning to the moment we descend into sleep at night, we’re bombarded with a chatter inside our head that permeates our waking life. It’s the voice inside, the internal narrator that, if you pay attention, never really stops talking.

Yet, it’s hard for us to believe that the thoughts in our head can affect the workings of the body.   READ MORE...

How do you Balance Assertiveness with Combativeness?

Answered by Dr. Michael Sessions, Sr. Consultant TLG

This is a great question and a distinction that confuses a lot of people. The confusion has its roots in the way that conflict is generally understood. Conflict can best be understood as the consequence that arises when the means of addressing one’s concerns are blocked by the efforts of another to address their concerns. With respect to balancing assertiveness and combativeness, the short answer is that these are not approaches one typically wants to balance. Combativeness is simply an extreme form of assertiveness.

Assertiveness refers to the advocacy for the means to address an issue or circumstance about which one is concerned. Combativeness is essentially assertiveness on steroids . READ MORE...

“only one spec of sand can go through the sand dial at one time”.
By Tino Mantella

I am far from a mindful expert. Since my arrival at Turknett, a bit less than a year ago, I have had the chance to learn something about the values of pursuing a mindfulness orientation. There are plenty of definitions around the theories. I particularly like this one that was provided by “Mindful Staff”.
"Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not be overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us". READ MORE.. .
Mindfulness for People Who Are Too Busy to Meditate
By Maria Gonzalez,

"When you just don't have the time."

Mindfulness has become almost a buzz-word. But what is it, really?  Mindfulness is, quite simply, the skill of being present and aware , moment by moment, regardless of circumstances.

For instance, researchers have found that mindfulness can reprogram the brain to be more rational and less emotional. When faced with a decision, meditators showed increased activity in the posterior insula of the brain, which has been linked to rational decision making. This allowed them to make decisions based more on fact than emotion. This is good news since...

Use this at the office, after a fight with your partner, after losing your patience with your child… When we are in the throes of deep anxiety or high stress, sometimes we need something a little more specific to help us through the moment.

This mini practice is 10-minutes for the moments of high stress. Tough meeting at the office, after a fight with your partner, rude driver on your commute…

As we practice in the midst of intense emotion, our only work is to remain in the present moment as much as possible, and to offer some kindness towards our experience.

One Sign It’s Finally Time to Let Go TODAY

"Remind yourself, there's always a fierce battle between two hungry forces going on inside you. One is negative—anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, regret, etc. The other is positive—love, joy, peace, hope, compassion, kindness, etc. The force that wins is the one you feed the most.
I learned that lesson the hard way...
Eighteen years ago, after a stressful day at work, I remember snapping at Marc and locking myself in our home office to work on a web app I had been coding on the side." READ MORE...
