Karen Martin, an events specialist, plans the monthly activities her workplace hosts to highlight causes that matter to employees. As a mother of a 24‑year‑old son with autism, she takes particular pride in organizing Autism Awareness Month events each April at her work's corporate campus. To support her efforts, Karen turns to the resources available through the Autism Ambassador Hub. Rack cards, fact sheets, pins, and other materials help her start conversations, answer questions, and give coworkers the tools they need to learn more.
“With the support of the Ambassador Program, we are able to get relevant information out to our colleagues,” Karen said.
For Karen, this work is meaningful, not only because of her nonverbal son Thomas, but because of the impact it has on the people around her.
“There’s not a person who hasn’t been affected in one way, shape, or form by autism,” she said. “You never know anyone’s story until you start talking to them. When we share information and try to educate people, they are very open. Everyone’s path and everyone’s journey is going to be different. But we can all start at the same place, and that’s arming ourselves with information.”
