Volunteering is at the core of every human being.

No one has made it through life without someone else's help.

Turning Point could not serve our community without a team of compassionate volunteers. Volunteers bring much-needed supplies, help with events, plant flowers at our facilities, decorate client rooms, meet assault survivors at the hospital and babysit little ones at the shelter.

In the beginning of the year, Turning Point made the difficult decision to temporarily shut down our volunteer program due to rising COVID cases following the holidays. Last month, we re-activated and re-engaged with our much-needed volunteers.

Our upcoming volunteer opportunities are throughout this newsletter, on our SignUp Genius and our website. The next volunteer orientation will be Thursday, July 14th from 6:00-7:30pm. If you know someone who might be interested in volunteering, please pass along this information.

To sign up, email Mary at moakley@turntoday.net or register on our SignUp Genius link.

Lucy is Somebody

Tom beat her and sexually assaulted her again. As soon as Lucy was able, she ran through the woods to her neighbors who took her to the police. She had been married to Tom for ten years and had left him two times before. This time Lucy realized that he was never going to change. Lucy was not only beaten physically but broken emotionally and financially. She came to the shelter without any ID, money or a phone and only had the clothes on her back. Turning Point assisted her in getting an I.D., Social Security Card, and a Birth Certificate. Lucy received safe shelter, hygiene and clothing items, counseling, court advocacy and case management.

Lucy became stronger and more independent each day. In Lucy’s own words, “This shelter is a life saver. I’ve accomplished more than I thought I could and learned so much about myself. I am somebody and I have gained a family that will always have a special place in my heart!” When Lucy completed the program, we assisted her in relocating out of the area to live close to her daughter. Shortly after, Lucy contacted us to let us know she was safe and thanked us again for helping her feel like she was somebody that mattered. To read more success stories, read our blog!
