The Board is grateful for the many qualified applicants with diverse backgrounds this year. This speaks to the vibrancy of our marine industry. We congratulate the 2022 recipients, profiled below.

The 2022 Turning The Tide Award Winners

Lifetime Achievement Award

The Honourable Richard Cashin is a labour leader who advanced the rights of inshore fish harvesters. He transformed the social fabric and lives of those living in rural Newfoundland and Labrador in ways that are still evident today. Throughout his life, he has been fiercely involved in politics and his leadership gave others a voice, inspiring action amongst those in our rural and coastal communities. In 2019, he was invited into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador, for his significant contributions.

Marine Industry Leadership

and Excellence Award

From humble beginnings, the Labrador Fishermen’s Union Shrimp Company has grown to be an industry leader, operating processing facilities in five Labrador communities, four of which are Indigenous. It services more than 600 fish harvesters, employs approximately 450 people – upwards of 70% of whom are Indigenous. The company has used innovative approaches to help build a robust and diverse commercial marine supply and service sector in vibrant, active coastal communities.

Historic Marine Significance

The Crow’s Nest is a private club which has been in operation for 70 years. Beginning as a club for visiting and stationed Navy Officers during World War II, the Crow’s Nest is rich in history; the Club has been recognized as a museum, housing hundreds of military artifacts and is a participant in the Virtual Museum of Canada. The Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador has presented the club with the Manning Award for Excellence in the Public Presentation of Historic Places.

Innovation Leadership Award

Virtual Marine develops state-of-the-art maritime safety training simulators. Situated next to one of the most dangerous offshore environments on the planet, Virtual Marine recognized that creating realistic simulations for the safety training of offshore workers would help save lives. Founded to help offshore operators run their businesses more safely, this purpose drives them to be leaders in their field. With clients located worldwide, they have shared their vision globally while demonstrating a commitment to the local economy.

Next Wave Leadership Award

As a young Indigenous woman working in the marine industry, Jasmine has played an integral role in developing relationships with indigenous partners and seafarers, especially as it relates to cadet recruitment and development. Instrumental in the evolution of Miawpukek Horizon, she has pursued projects which benefit Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples alike. Recently promoted to Business Manager for Miawpukek Horizon. Jasmine’s excellent work has positively impacted the industry’s seafarer shortage.
