Clearing the Undergrowth: A Transformative Effort Along Turtle Creek
|
In a remarkable display of community effort and dedication, TCA recently undertook a project to clear the undergrowth and Chinese Privet along the west bank of the ravine between Park Bridge Ct and Fairmount St. This ambitious endeavor, executed by a crew of four men over five days, has yielded transformative results that are garnering praise from area residents.
"The improvement is incredible," remarked one resident who took the time to commend TCA's efforts in a letter to the park board. The removal of undergrowth and trash has not only enhanced the area's aesthetics but also improved the creek's visibility. "We can actually see the creek and the ducks now," exclaimed another resident, highlighting the project's tangible impact on the local environment.
Beyond the aesthetic improvements, the project has had a significant impact on the safety and accessibility of the area. "I now feel safer walking the trail in this area," shared a resident, noting that the cleared undergrowth has alleviated concerns about potential hiding spots. The transformation has created a more inviting and secure environment for residents and visitors alike.
|
To ensure the project's long-term success, measures will be taken to prevent the return of the invasive Chinese Privet. The area will be treated immediately and again in the fall, further safeguarding the progress made in clearing the undergrowth.
However, the work is far from complete. To extend the transformation to the east embankment, where fallen trees present a challenge, TCA is organizing a fundraising event on April 9th at Park Towers.
The east side will require additional resources due to the complexity of removing the fallen trees and the steep embankment.
Your support at this event will play a crucial role in continuing the momentum of this transformative project. If you can't attend the event but would like to help, click DONATE today.

The area between Lemmon Ave Bridges - gets major clean-up!
|
TCA's latest initiative aimed at restoring the beauty and ecological health of the area between and around the Lemmon Ave Bridges.
Recognizing the pressing need to address the underbrush and invasive Chinese Privet that has engulfed the landscape, TCA has taken decisive action to fund this impactful project.
Working in close collaboration with city officials to address concerns surrounding a homeless encampment in the area, TCA swiftly mobilized its vendor, Trash Free Waterways, to tackle the daunting task of clearing the site of all trash and debris.
|
In recent days, Trash Free Waterways has shifted its focus to clearing the overgrown brush, removing the invasive Chinese Privet, and eliminating organic materials caught on the concrete piers of the bridges.
This ambitious endeavor, executed by a crew of two men over several days, marks a significant step forward in TCA's ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of Turtle Creek.
However, the work is far from over. While rain forced a temporary pause in operations, TCA remains steadfast in its determination to clear the creek's shoreline on both sides, extending all the way down to the pedestrian bridge.

Here are some additional before-and-after pictures of our ongoing Lemmon Ave Bridge project. It's unfortunate that Dallas City Water won't provide assistance with clearing this organic material. In their opinion, it's not a problem because it isn't clogging a storm drain—at least not yet!

Median Refresh: Enhancing the Beauty of Turtle Creek Corridor
In addition to the above work, TCA started the median refresh project across the corridor. This comprehensive initiative includes annual color updates for all containers, hanging baskets, and median endcaps, ensuring a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere to the boulevard.
Above photo - Five new Crepe Myrtles will fill this void nicely.
In addition to adding splashes of color, TCA is also focused on revitalizing the greenery in all 25 medians. Any dead, dying, or underperforming plants are being replaced with fresh, vibrant foliage, rejuvenating the landscape and enhancing its visual appeal. Each median will also receive a fresh layer of mulch, providing essential nutrients and moisture to support healthy plant growth.
Furthermore, as part of our commitment to sustainability, TCA is conducting a thorough review of the irrigation systems in the medians. Our team is checking for leaks and broken lines to ensure that all new vegetation receives the proper amount of water, minimizing waste and promoting efficient water usage.
|
|
|
|
Notably, the medians south of Hall Street are receiving special attention following last summer's extreme drought and temperatures. Despite facing budgetary constraints last fall, TCA remained committed to the project and is now moving forward with the much-needed makeover for these medians.
As the median refresh project progresses, TCA is reminded that none of this is possible without the support and commitment of our members. Thank you for doing your part to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the Turtle Creek Corridor.

Our esteemed members, Bruzzy and Gloria Westheimer, have once again demonstrated their remarkable generosity and unwavering commitment to our cause.
Both were previous residents of Dallas, working in the downtown area for many years back in the 60's. Today, Dallas serves as their second home. Although they now reside in Oklahoma, their connection to Dallas remains strong.
Bruzzy, a renowned philanthropist and mentor, and his wonderful wife Gloria have recently made a generous gift to our organization. They've asked for the amount not to be shared. Their generous contribution will enable us to expand our initiatives and further our efforts to safeguard Turtle Creek's natural beauty and ecological integrity.
Their belief in our mission inspires us to strive for excellence and make a lasting difference in the preservation and protection of Turtle Creek. We extend our deepest gratitude to Bruzzy and Gloria for their extraordinary generosity.
