Welcome Back

We're excited to present our sixth issue of "Turtle Talk," a monthly e-blast with the latest updates and news-you-can-use about the South Bay Local Travel Network (LTN), produced by the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG).

Here's a little reminder: the LTN is planned to be a 243-mile network of existing, low-speed routes that are designed to accommodate travel via small, low-speed vehicles (aka street-worthy golf carts, e-bikes, pedal bikes, e-scooters, etc.).

Electrify Expo

On June 1 and 2, SBCCOG staff attended the Electrify Expo in Long Beach to interact with the coolest EV models on the market.

As the largest electric mobility event in North America, vehicles on display ranged in size and function, from flashy to utilitarian, including e-scooters, e-bikes, e-skateboards, and e-trikes to neighborhood electric vehicles, e-motorcycles, and electric cars.

Participants had the opportunity to test ride the vehicles on a closed-off demo course. SBCCOG staff had a great time taking several low-speed vehicle models for a spin. The SBCCOG is working with our partners to bring a similar community event to the South Bay this fall. This event will allow community members to test ride and drive low-speed vehicles provided by local businesses. Stay tuned for more details.

All cyclists need to know basic hand signals to communicate their intentions to others on the road. Never assume that drivers and other cyclists will act predictably or anticipate your movements. A simple wave of the arm can go a long way.

Join CivicSpark Fellow Anne Tsai on her commute to work featuring proposed routes on the Local Travel Network. But don’t just sit there and watch; right-size your ride by getting on your bike to enjoy the sunny weather and long daylight hours outside! 

Do the ABC quick check before you ride: 

A is for air – Confirm that your tires have the proper tire pressure. 

B is for brakes and battery – Pull on your brake levers to ensure that they are working and check that your battery is on. 

C is for cranks, chain, cassette and charge – Make sure that these are moving smoothly while you pedal, and check that your battery is charged.  

Quick is for quick release – Check that any quick release parts are tightened securely. 

Check is for final checkout ride – Check that everything is in working order and loose items are secured before starting your ride.

Tiny Car Enters U.S. Market

The popular Eli ZERO microcar is coming to the United States. Folks can reserve the vehicle today with a $200 refundable deposit.

At a 90-mile range, 25-mph top speed, and just 88 inches in length, the two-seater vehicle is designed to transform urban trips and short commutes. In fact, nearly four Eli ZERO cars can fit in a single standard parking spot. However, owners can still experience many of the same features of a normal car, including rearview camera, heating and AC, trunk space, Bluetooth speakers, and CarPlay and Android Auto. 

New micromobility innovations and technologies are constantly emerging from around the world. We want to showcase some of these exciting vehicle inventions in the industry. Perhaps you’ll spot one of these devices cruising around the South Bay in the near future.
