Cold weather in Florida's panhandle wreaks havoc on local sea turtles

Dozens of cold-stunned sea turtles were pulled by biologists from the frigid waters of St. Joseph Bay in Florida's Panhandle during a cold snap earlier this month. The turtles pictured were awaiting transfer into bins where they were to Gulf World Marine Institute in Panama City Beach for recovery. [ Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Comission ]

As Floridians reveled in a rare snowfall last week with snowmen and sledding, a team of Florida wildlife experts was busy mounting a sweeping rescue just offshore of the Panhandle.

In one of the state’s largest cold-water rescues over the past decade, biologists say they saved a whopping 1,200 stunned sea turtles from the frigid St. Joseph Bay area over five days. Images from local, state and federal rescuers show kayaks and truck beds filled with groggy turtles, unable to regulate their body temperature.

WE CAN ALL HELP!

Recent boat strike victim! Red arrow indicates start of strike wound.

It's an all too common occurrence when boats and marine animals meet on the water... boat strikes! Sadly, we receive calls on these occurrences FAR TOO OFTEN.

One way that you can help protect marine life when you’re out enjoying the waterways is to have a designated marine animal spotter on board whenever possible. Somebody that is looking out constantly for the dolphins, manatees and sea turtles that may be found in our waterways.

Additionally, please make sure you’re following slow speed and no wake signs.

If you encounter an injured marine animal while you’re enjoying your boating time or out on the beach in Florida, please call the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
