"Billfish and Adaptations"
Our May 2019 regular monthly meeting will be on Monday May 6, 2019 commencing at 6:30pm. Our featured guest speaker this month from Illinois is marine/fisheries biologist Jim Gamlin. Jim has been a field editor for  MidWest Outdoors  magazine for more than 2 decades. Gamlin’s travels eventually brought him to Florida and the Keys, where he unexpectedly became involved in saving sea turtles. Jim has authored several non-fiction books about saving sea turtles (including A Home for Nickel, and Because of Nickel), along with a children’s book titled Lucky Nickel, the Story of Nickel the Sea Turtle. Jim will be making a presentation on Billfish, and will tell some of the interesting adaptations of these fish.

Q&A w/producers following screening
Join us for a very special viewing of this feature-length independent documentary which focuses on a record-breaking cold-stunned sea turtle stranding season on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where over 1,200 cold-stunned sea turtles washed ashore, over 90 percent of them Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles. Hundreds of people from over 10 states and 21 institutions came together to rescue them—an effort that included “the largest airlift of an endangered species, probably anywhere in the United States, quite possibly the world.”
We are so honored to have the producers on hand for a reception and Q&A session!
Seating is Limited. Tickets will be available for purchase in the next few days.
Nesting Season Has Begun!
It's mating and nesting season not only in the Florida Keys, but along the coastal US as well, and we are hoping for a flipper fintastic season. If you are visiting any beaches or live along the coastal shore, please be aware of the following information:
  • Lights out for sea turtles. No outdoor lighting please & close your blinds.
  • Keep a clear path. If you are a homeowner, please pull your furniture, kayaks, etc high up on the beach at night.
  • Do NOT Disturb nesting females, nests or hatchlings. It is against the law.
  • No flash photography!!!
Thank you for helping provide a safe environment for our turtles.
Artist's Help Save-A-Turtle
MOTE Ocean Fest Buoy Project
On April 13, 2019, Save-A-Turtle attended Mote Marine Laboratory’s annuall event, Mote’s Ocean Fest. OceanFest is a community celebration to support Mote’s coral reef restoration and research programs. This event was held a the Truman Waterfront Park all day on 4/13. There were dozens of marine educational booths, environmental displays and educators, artists, food, live music and more. We had our mobile educational sea turtle trailer on site, which although the interior is not yet finished, the exterior graphics and media are in place and were utilized. We unveiled our “ Buoy Project” which is our Board and member’s efforts to raise money by selling buoys we have been collecting for months off beaches during cleanups and nesting walks. The buoys are cleaned, washed and painted with marine and sea turtle themes by our members and Board. They are sold for a small donation, it’s a win-win because trash is removed from the beach, re-purposed into original art in exchange for a donations which fund things like scholarships offered at the local community college, supplies for our beach walkers, expenses for the trailer and more.
Wyland Paints SAT Education Trailer
It was also at Ocean Fest before a large enthusiastic crowd, world renowned marine artist, Wyland, painted our brand new mobile educational sea turtle trailer on site at OceanFest in Key West. His original art depicts a swimming sea turtle. Along with painting the trailer live before the crowd, he also on site painted a Sumi-E Chinese brush art swimming sea turtle. On the spot he donated the original painting to Save-A-Turtle of the Florida Keys to raise funds, and before the paint was even dry, one of our Board Officer’s had received a call on their cell phone and purchased the art after watching the live stream on social media! By the end of this year our trailer will be outfitted completely and back on the road for custom presentations all over the Keys and beyond. This is, in large part, because of Wyland’s support of our tiny grassroots organization and his appreciation and belief in the work Save-A-Turtle does to help sea turtles through education, beach surveying, and habitat protection. We are forever grateful to Wyland for being so generous with time and talent. We hope you were there, it was a really great day and we’re already making plans for next year. Thank you Wyland, you do so much to help the environment, we are privileged to be considered worthy of your benevolence.
Jessica Ann Designs Baby Turtle UV Shirt for SAT
Jessica Ann is a marine life artist connecting people to a moment they shared in, on or by the sea. Jessica did not choose art as much as it chose her. Born and raised in the Florida Keys, she was always near the ocean, whether she was on a boat, snorkeling or simply admiring from close by. Jessica finds inspiration from bright and vibrant colors of sea life below and patterns and textures from the tropical flora above. Jessica provides Paint Night Parties throughout the island chains where she teaches locals how to paint as well. She and her husband Chris are dedicated to their family and together, have created a beautiful business featuring her art work.

When approached by Save-A-Turtle to create a UV shirt for us, she immediately said YES! Jessica also donated the original painting of the baby turtles to Save-A-Turtle to auction off as a fundraiser. Jessica, we thank you so very much for sharing your talent with SAT and are deeply grateful to you for all that you do to support our volunteers on a regular basis.

Loggerhead Encounter Newfound Harbor
Loggerhead encounter by SAT VP
Sherri Crilly. April, 2019
Newfound Harbor Sanctuary
Lower Keys
Earlier this month, I was planning on taking my visiting Canadian cousins to Looe Key Reef off of Big Pine Key for some snorkeling. Unfortunately, it was too windy to head off shore. I was soooo disappointed as I wanted them to see sharks, goliath grouper and lots of tropical fish. So instead, we headed to a local patch reef just a few 100 yards off shore. It's not "the reef", but it never seems to disappoint. We weren't in the water but a few minutes when this HUGE male loggerhead came swimming by! Need I say how excited we were and very happy that the wind kept us inshore! Flippers Up! ~ Sherri Crilly SAT VP
