TCNA President's Message

Amy MacDonald

Dear Neighbors,

It’s an honor and a joy to step into the role of President of the Tuscany Canterbury Neighborhood Association. I’m deeply grateful to Pat Hawthorne for her generous leadership and mentorship, and to our current and past Board members for their steadfast care and support.

As I write this from Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire—a place I’ve visited since childhood—I’m serenaded by the haunting call of loons, a beloved signature of the northwoods. Back home in Tuscany-Canterbury, the birdsong is no less magical—on recent walks with my dog Suki, I’ve spotted cardinals, herons, mourning doves, robins, crows, and even an owl. What a gift to live in a neighborhood so full of beauty and life.

Whether you’re enjoying the summer right here at home or off on adventures of your own, I hope the season brings you peace, joy, and connection.

With warmest regards,

Amy MacDonald

President, TCNA

The TCNA June Picnic was a huge success!

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped and neighbors who brought side dishes and drinks to share. About 80 neighbors came and State Delegates, Elizabeth Embry and Regina Boyce, joined the fun.

Special thanks to Calvert School for allowing TCNA to use the middle school area for the general meeting and picnic.

Tuscany-Canterbury Public Safety Updates

Garth Thompson, Chair of TCNA Public Safety Committee

Jack Boyson

Tuscany-Canterbury (with 4000 residents and 1800 homes and condo/ apartments) is one of the safest neighborhoods in Baltimore.

Northern District Police

Summer Safety Suggestions and Tips

  • Keep outdoor lights on outside your condos and on your porches throughout the night even if you are not home. This discourages crime from happening.

  • Check your car doors to make sure they are locked (even if you park in a condo or apartment building garage). Don't leave any valuables visible in your car.

  • If you are going away even for a few days, tell a neighbor who can keep an eye and ear out for anything unusual and check for mail and/or, newspapers daily even if you have them on hold.

  • If you see something suspicious happening, call 911 AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Summer 2025

Stony Run Path along Linkwood Road

We are working with the Friends of Stony Run, Parks & People Foundation and Baltimore City Rec and Parks to complete the Stony Run path along Linkwood Rd. The hope is that state funds will be available in the near future to spend on design. Before contracts can be signed, a variety of documents need to pass between the state, the city and Friends of Stony Run. Additional funding may be needed, since there has been significant inflation in the years since the funds were allocated.

Improve Pedestrian Safety in the Neighborhood

A city DOT engineer and a representative from Councilwoman Ramos' office made a preliminary visit in June to observe traffic on Canterbury Road and Tuscany Road. We await a formal traffic study in the fall. We hope to continue preliminary discussions with the Guilford Association about improving the safety for pedestrians crossing Charles St. at Highfield Rd.

We remain vigilant for potholes that need to be filled, non-functional or damaged lighting and any other issues related to streets.

Please contact me at beilerts@gmail.com if you see something that is in need of attention

Greens Committee

Eric Elton and Patrick Mutch, Committee Co-Chairs

Board Member of Friends of Stony Run: Eric Elton

TCNA Landscape Committee

TCNA has adopted public spaces and created four neighborhood gardens. With the help of TCNA volunteers and contracted services with Mark Pratt, routine weeding and mulching of the four neighborhood gardens was done in the spring. Work on the gardens continued in the summer. Periodically, the TCNA Greens Committee will replant, refresh, and water the gardens.

Many neighbors walk around our beautiful neighborhood. The location of the four gardens that TCNA maintains are listed by the pictures of the gardens below. Enjoy your strolls this summer.

The 39th Street Garden is located at the northwest intersection of 39th Street and Canterbury Road. It is the first public area that TCNA 'adopted', and in 2012 after the roundabout was built a larger garden space was created. Water continues to be a challenge. In 2019, new shrubbery was planted that requires less water.

39th St. Garden: 2019

39th St. Garden: 2025

The Ridgemede Elbow is on Ridgemede Road where it takes a sharp 90 degree turn.

The Tuscany Oval is at the intersection of Tuscany and Ridgemede.

Stony Run Pedestrian Bridge gardens are near Linkwood Road and Stoneyford.

Tree Stewards

GOAL: Keep Tuscany-Canterbury Green and Tree-healthy

The Tree Canopy

Baltimore's goal is to reach a 40% tree canopy by 2037. We’ve already achieved that in Tuscany-Canterbury at 40.6%. We can still do better to plant and save more trees.

Calvert Liaison Committee Report, July 2025

Happy Summer!  I hope everyone is enjoying the quiet respite of summer to refuel and finding the perfect books to read.  This includes ALL educators who understand this as dedicated teachers.  We have email contact over the summer with Calvert and recently reported the large tree branch downed by a recent storm on Tuscany.  Please feel free to email me with any issues that require notification to Calvert School.

I would like to express my thanks to Ned Lewison who is stepping down from the liaison committee after serving for many years.  The committee has a total of five members from TCNA, and we make efforts to identify residents who live in close proximity to Calvert to serve.  I am pleased to announce we have two new members.  Kathleen Robinson lives in the Gardens of Guilford and Steve Frazier resides at the intersection of Tuscany and Canterbury.   Current members Arna Margolis of The Tuscany and Ferd Latrobe of Canterbury Road have offered to remain on the committee.

If you see a problem, have a question, or want to help, let TCNA know.

,

Birdwatching has many mental health benefits.

Michael who lives on Cloverhill Road saw the picture and video of the robin in the last newsletter and offered to share some of the bird pictures that he took in the neighborhood during the past winter 2025.

You can identify the birds you see or hear with the free Merlin Bird ID app. It has free global bird guide with photos, sounds, maps, and more.

If you have bird photos in the neighborhood or bird watching tips that you would like to share, please email presidentTCNA@gmail.com

STREET LIGHTS: July Updates

If you see a street light that is out, call 311 as soon as possible. If it doesn't get repaired within a few days, email TCNA with the confirmation number. Click here

Special thanks to neighbor, John Hopkins, who follows up with BGE until each street light problem is resolved.

Lamppost on the 100 block Tuscany Road fell down in March 2025. It was replaced in July 2025.

In Baltimore City, it's the law to immediately remove dog feces from both private and public property. This includes streets, sidewalks, parks, and other public areas. Fines for failing to do so can range from $100 to $1,000.

There are trash containers throughout the neighborhood that are available for neighbors to use or TAKE IT HOME WITH YOU.

  • 39th and Charles Street, provided by Baltimore City DPW
  • 39th and Stony Run near the entrance of the Woodcliff Manor
  • Linkwood Road, Ridgemede Alley and near Tuscany, provided by the Ridgemede/Ridgewood Condos
  • Linkwood Road near Overhill, provided by Baltimore City Parks and Rec

Tuscan Hills Apartments: Issues

The trash problem has been resolved for the past month. Hopefully the area will continue to be cleaned on a regular basis. Special thanks to Councilwoman Odette Ramos and the City Code Enforcement office for their continued efforts to solve the issue.

The abandoned cars still are still an issue on the lot. Cars without tags or current car registration are not permitted on their parking lot. Odette continues to work on this issue.

May 30, 2025 : This is the area where the dumpster was removed.

July 2025: Old overflowing dumpster with furniture, tires, and trash on the ground.

Even though the apartments are not in Tuscany-Canterbury neighborhood but are adjacent to us, TCNA has taken an active role in fixing these problems.

Speed Cameras on Jones Falls Expressway

Currently, speed cameras are installed at the following locations along the JFX:

  • Northbound Jones Falls Expressway / I-83 at Smith Avenue
  • Southbound Jones Falls Expressway / I-83 at W. North Avenue

BCDOT will be reinstalling two speed cameras near 41st Street to improve speed compliance along the corridor.

These cameras will go live on August 4, 2025.

Residential Permit Parking (RPP)

Sharon Dlhosh, new TCNA Coordinator

Any Problems with the RPP Computer System?

Sharon is the TCNA liaison to the Baltimore City Parking Authority. If you had any problems with the renewal system, please let Sharon know. She will take your concerns to the meetings held every other month beginning in September. Hopefully they can be corrected by the next renewal time.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED: Website Administrator

Julie Watson has been the website administrator for the past 4 years and has set-up an awesome TCNA website. She has moved out of the neighborhood but still remains the TCNA volunteer administrator. Volunteers continue to upload new content to the website but we need someone who is the administrator. The website uses a Word Press format, and TCNA has a professional who set up the site in 2018 and can be contacted if there are any problems.

Johns Hopkins University Student Center

The wait is almost over.

Date to open: August 2025

Groundbreaking for the center was in 2021. The Hopkins Student Center will open its doors—and open up new possibilities for students to socialize, connect, create, and relax. But this is more than a building. It’s a place designed for connection, creativity, and community.

The new building is located directly next to the Wyman Park Building on the Homewood campus and will serve as a portal for the community to connect with the institute. It will be LEED-certified and landscaped to reflect the natural environment of the mid-Atlantic region. Designed by world-renowned architecture firm Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the SNF Agora’s new building will pay homage to the ancient Athenian agora by creating a space for civic engagement and informed, inclusive dialogue in the modern era.

Work started in the summer of 2021 and it will open Fall of 2025.

JHU Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Institute

The preliminary site work will be followed by excavation of the site and then construction of the new buildings, which will be “coming out of the ground” in mid-2026 with anticipated completion by 2029.
