Rule of Christ Training

Did your church receive a new pastor? Each church & pastor new to one another are required to attend a Rule of Christ Training. The Rule of Christ program was originally developed by the late Rev. Terry N. Gladstone, a Deacon in the Michigan area, as a way of applying Jesus’ teachings from Matthew 18 to the life and relationships in the local church. Many Annual Conferences have adopted variations of the ROC model because it is so very effective at addressing our way of communicating with one another and improving our ability to become effective disciples for Jesus Christ. As Bishop Tracy S. Malone said in her first Episcopal Address to East Ohio, “A key foundational strategy for discipleship is congregational health. Healthy churches make healthy disciples. Healthy disciples make healthy disciples. Healthy disciples transform the world… The overall health of the church, and the overall vitality and effectiveness of ministry, largely depends on how pastors and churches handle conflict, disagreements and relationships.”

Each church & pastor that are new to one another are required to attend Rule of Christ Training on September 18. We are holding a one-day training in two convenient locations. The morning group will meet at Broadway UMC in New Philadelphia from 9:00 a.m. through 12:00 p.m. & the afternoon group will meet at Grace UMC in North Canton from 2:00 p.m. through 5:00 p.m.

Who should attend from your church? The pastor, SPRC committee, any person in a leadership position within the church, & other congregation members that wish to attend.

Please contact the district office to register for either session. We will be reaching out to churches that have not RSVP'd for a session the week of August 23.

75 Years of Ministry Celebration

September 24th - 26th, 2021
From fellowship around tables in the dining hall, to laughter and splashing at the pool, and songs of praise that echo through Vesper Hill at twilight, God's love has been made real to campers and staff at
Wanake for 75 years.

This September, we want to celebrate with you all that Wanake has meant, the ministry that continues today and the ways that we can share God's love in the future. Revisit the places around camp that are special to you, reconnect with friends, roast a marshmallow, paddle on Lake Arnold, and do the pattycake polka
at the barn riot.

This weekend will be time for sharing memories, stories and Wanake traditions in worship, around the campfire and among friends. If you’d like to share something
as part of a campfire or worship time, please contact Wanake.

¶206 “Local churches, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, may enhance their witness to one another and
to the world by showing forth the love of Jesus Christ through forms of mutual cooperation.”
Over the next few weeks, the district office will be highlighting Cooperative Ministries & Charges throughout our District.
This week we feature pastor Aaron Linard, serving at Midvale, Newport, & Wilmot UMCs.
"Please introduce yourself and answer the following questions: "What churches you serve and what they are called? (ex: 2-point charge, Cooperative Parish, Cooperative Ministry, etc.)" "What benefits you see in this formed grouping?" and "How is it enhancing the witness to one another and to the world?"

My name is Aaron Linard. I have a wife Leanna and four children; Lola, Ava, Gloria, and Beau. We all enjoy being outside. Whether that be walking trails and bike rides or going to the park and running around in the back yard. Some have said we have our hands full but when you look at those smiles we wouldn't have it any other way! I am currently in my seventh year of pastoral ministry within the United Methodist Church. My first three years I served as a supply pastor under leadership of a lead pastor and I have been a licensed local for four years. I currently serve full time in a three point charge for the Midvale, Newport, and Wilmot churches of the Tuscarawas District. Having these three churches in three different cities, three different communities, three different school districts and also two different counties, they can work with one other discussing different types of mission, outreach, service and share those ideas to what works best for their particular setting. When one person is being attentive to the whisper of the Spirit, they are able to be in connection to God and in turn be in the will of God, making disciples, maturing disciples, evangelizing, serving, witnessing etc. Now, when multiple people, from multiple backgrounds, multiple communities have a connection to the pastor and are they themselves being attentive to the whisper of the Spirit...then WE become a Proverbs 27:17 people!"

Community engagement and fund raising opportunity at the Stark County Fair

WHO: Your church and/or its individual ministries (youth; daycare; music department; missions)

WHAT: Selling entry tickets to the fair

WHEN: August 31-September 6

WHERE: Stark County Fair

WHY:  To raise funds to be utilized by your church

Sign up in teams of two (at least one person in each team must be over 18); work up to 2 shifts per day (7:30am-12:30pm; 11:30am-5:30pm; 4:30pm-9:30pm); your church receives remittance for each shift worked by your members of your organization.

Bonus: Workers receive free admittance to the fair for non-shift hours! Training provided prior to the fair opening!

Please call Char Messenger (from Dueber UMC) at 330-268-4853 by August 25 for more information and/or to register your church/ministry!

Bottom Line: The amount of proceeds you will receive for your work depends on multiple factors. First, is the number of shifts that are worked by members of your organization. Second, fair attendance is factored into the total amount of money that will be split among the groups working. If fair attendance is up, your profits will be too! Over the last four fair years our workers have received $16.25/per person/per shift on average.
COVID Protocols

Reminder: With new variants of COVID 19 being discovered, the need may arise for us to revisit some of the protocols already in place.

Saturation Sunday is September 19
Representatives of Africa University will preach in East Ohio Conference churches on Sunday, September 19 as part of Saturation Sunday to promote the University and our Teach • Reach • Bless campaign to build a new dorm for female students on the AU campus. The dorm will enable more female students to live on campus, meaning they will not need to find off-campus housing and commute to class – situations that make them vulnerable to untenable situations.

On Saturation Sunday, September 19 – or on a future Sunday of your church leadership’s choosing – pastors, congregations and faith communities of the East Ohio Conference are asked to share the story of Africa University and the Teach • Reach • Bless campaign. In supporting Saturation Sunday and the campaign, we are showing our commitment to improving the education and wellness of women today for a better Africa tomorrow.

The August 23 E-News will contain the list of Saturation Sunday speakers, the EOC churches at which they will speak, and the times of the services.
