The Canal District Superintendency Committee has been anticipating celebrating the retirement of Debbie Bryant, who has served 10 years as the administrative assistant of the Canal District after previously serving 12 years as communication coordinator of the North Coast District. Please join us in congratulating Debbie for her many years of service to the Canal District and the East Ohio Conference. Anticipating this transition for the end of the year, the Canal District and Tuscarawas District Superintendency Committees have discerned a plan which will employ our respective resources in the most healthy and life-giving way.

We are pleased to announce that effective January 1, 2022, Megan Myers, current administrative assistant for the Tuscarawas District, will assume the position of district administrator for both the Canal District and the Tuscarawas District. Megan will report directly to the Rev. Cara Stultz Costello, Tuscarawas District superintendent, and the Rev. Boy Scouts of America Bankruptcy Affects United Methodist Congregations
The United Methodist Church and its predecessor denominations have a relationship with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), which dates back more than 100 years. In February 2020, the BSA announced the national organization would file for bankruptcy to allow it to continue carrying on its mission while also compensating sexual abuse victims who were harmed during their time in scouting. While the bankruptcy is ongoing, the BSA, along with its local councils, recently reached an agreement with representatives of most of the survivors on a proposed $850 million settlement.

Camp Wanake
75 Years of Ministry Celebration

September 24th - 26th, 2021
From fellowship around tables in the dining hall, to laughter and splashing at the pool, and songs of praise that echo through Vesper Hill at twilight, God's love has been made real to campers and staff at Wanake for 75 years.

This September, we want to celebrate with you all that Wanake has meant, the ministry that continues today and the ways that we can share God's love in the future. Revisit the places around camp that are special to you, reconnect with friends, roast a marshmallow, paddle on Lake Arnold, and do the pattycake polka
at the barn riot.

This weekend will be time for sharing memories, stories and Wanake traditions in worship, around the campfire and among friends. If you’d like to share something as part of a campfire or worship time, please contact Wanake.

Open to all clergy, laity serving as a pastor, and retirees. Join your fellow clergy at one of the following UMVIM sites for a day of learning, service, and fellowship! See firsthand what the mission does and learn ways local churches can partner with them. We will be doing hands on mission during this day too! • Blue Rose, Mansfield (Mid-Ohio)
  • Covered Bridge Mission, Jefferson (Western Reserve)
  • Epworth Center, Bethesda (Southern Hills)
  • Nehemiah Mission of Cleveland (North Coast)
  • Urban Mission, Steubenville (Ohio Valley)

The sites will have the freedom to structure the day, but everyone will do hands on work at the site or in the community, worship, and have lunch. Skilled and unskilled UMVIMers needed.

The event is free, but you do need to register in advance since group size is limited. Contact the district office for the registration link.
Saturation Sunday is September 19
Representatives of Africa University will preach in East Ohio Conference churches on Sunday, September 19 as part of Saturation Sunday to promote the University and our Teach • Reach • Bless campaign to build a new dorm for female students on the AU campus. The dorm will enable more female students to live on campus, meaning they will not need to find off-campus housing and commute to class – situations that make them vulnerable to untenable situations.

On Saturation Sunday, September 19 – or on a future Sunday of your church leadership’s choosing – pastors, congregations and faith communities of the East Ohio Conference are asked to share the story of Africa University and the Teach • Reach • Bless campaign. In supporting Saturation Sunday and the campaign, we are showing our commitment to improving the education and wellness of women today for a better Africa tomorrow.

The August 23 E-News will contain the list of Saturation Sunday speakers, the EOC churches at which they will speak, and the times of the services.

Attention youth leaders: As you start to plan for fall and into 2022, we are all struggling to understand ministry throughout the pandemic. If you need someone to coach you through these uncertain times, be sure to sign up for a coaching call with Kaye Wolfinger, director of Young People’s Ministries. She can talk you through what is best for your context, listen to your ideas, and share trends that we are seeing in young people’s ministries. She has availability during business hours as well as evenings and Saturdays.
