ATA SURVEY ON TWIC AND HME DELAYS
Many members of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) have reported challenges related to the enrollment and renewal processes for Hazardous Materials Endorsements (HMEs) and Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWICs). Given how widespread and persistent these challenges are, ATA is gathering data from its committees and conferences with an interest in this issue to help staff better understand the scope of these problems and identify relevant patterns. This information will help ATA advocate for solutions that directly address underlying problems.

Importantly, there are 8 states (Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin) that do not use TSA as their enrollment services provider for HMEs, and we want to know if the delays are shorter or longer in those states relative to the 42 other states that use TSA as their enrollment provider. TSA claims that applicants in the 8 states are more likely to “encounter processing delays as long as several months,” but we have reason to believe that delays are as long, if not longer, in the 42 states where TSA is the only enrollment services provider.

Please answer the questions on this short survey with as much detail as possible. Please have only ONE representative from your company fill out the survey to avoid duplicate answers. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact [email protected]. He would be happy to discuss this issue with you.

REQUEST FROM THE MAYOR OF CARTHAGE, TN
Mayor Sarah Marie Smith of Carthage, TN has reached out to us and requested that we communicate to our membership that when drivers are traveling the by-pass around town going south down the hill towards Walmart in Carthage, there are numerous homes in a residential area within a short distance of the road. With many small children living in these homes, when trucks use their jake brake at night, the sound can be loud enough to wake and sometimes frighten sleeping children. They would greatly appreciate it if you could get the word out to your drivers. The City of Carthage will also be adding signage to hopefully help with the issue.
