Message from the Chair - Scott Leggett
|
|
Greetings, all!
DID YOU KNOW?
- That the cost of your room accommodation is included in your registration fee at our Las Vegas Conference? This means no separate hotel expense to attend.
- That you have the opportunity over the 3 days of the Las Vegas Conference to take multiple classes in ringing related areas both hands-on and lecture style?
- That you will experience massed ringing at the conference under the direction of some of the top conductors in our handbell community?
- That you will have the opportunity to attend or perform at multiple concerts during the Vegas conference?
- That you will have opportunity to start or continue your journey in obtaining certification during the conference?
- That you can apply to be in the conference choir in Vegas for those who want some extra musical challenges?
- That our Vegas conference has an exciting youth track making the weekend a great option for our youth and families for a fun-filled weekend?
If you haven't registered yet for the conference with all the opportunities for education, fellowship, and fun, what are you waiting for?!
Plus, before our July conference, there are upcoming Spring Rings throughout Area 12 to attend, including the LA Metro Spring Ring (March 20-21), where the Area 12 board will be having our Spring meeting. You have the opportunity to attend the event and meet with your board members at the same time.
I hope you are getting as excited as I am for our Vegas conference, as well as all the upcoming events in Area 12.
'Til next time,
Scott

Volunteers Needed in Vegas!
Do you know how many people it takes working together to make a great event experience for everyone? I suppose there's not really a "magic number," but we could definitely use some volunteers to help us in Vegas! Whether you have a couple of hours, a half a day, or would love to help us for one or more full days of the main conference or our pre-conference events, we have a variety of areas of need.
From setting up classrooms or moving bells and tables, to helping out at registration or taking tickets at meals or concerts, to assisting one or more of our fabulous instructors or clinicians, we've got something for everyone who's willing to help.
And we're happy to offer some perks in exchange for your time. Depending on your level of availability, these range from concert tickets or meals (including our Thursday night Ice Cream social), to one or more night's housing. Or for those of you who just can't get enough and would we willing to volunteer throughout the entire event, we can offer a full ride room/board (for included meals on those days, and double occupancy room).
If you're ready to say yes to volunteering, please send an email to
webmaster.area12@handbellmusicans.org. You can also indicate your interest in being a volunteer when completing your
conference registration form.
We look forward to seeing you soon in Vegas!

Fri &
Sat, March 20 & 21, 2020
LA Metro Spring Ring
Ringin' at Red Hill
Clinicians: Matthew Compton and Erik Der
Additional information and registration form can be downloaded
here.
This event is sponsored by Handbell Musicians of America.
MARCH 20TH IS JUST 7 WEEKS AWAY!!!
You ask: March 20th is not Ash Wednesday; it's not Easter... so what is the big deal about March 20th? March 20th is the day that
Ringin' at Red Hill begins. If you or your group intend to attend I need to know NOW! Please email me at
LAMetro.Area12@handbellmusicians.org.
Clinician Matthew Compton is being brought in from Washington State. His pieces are consistently in the handbell "top 40," and he will be leading the group to new musical heights. Several of the pieces are a part of
Red, White, & Bells, the Area 12 Conference this summer in Las Vegas.
The Spring Ring includes several great pieces, including the Area 12 Composition Winner, "Fervent Freedom" by Michael Mazzatenta. AGEHR Publishing's Music Adviser Brian Childers commented on the piece in the January E-notes, which you can find
here. Brian describes the piece as a "bright and rhythmic piece" featuring "soaring melodies" and "percussive accompaniment"". Indicated to be performed "with passion," this celebration of freedom is an energetic anthem appropriate for church, community, and festival groups. Be a part of the first folks to ring this piece in public as well as the other fabulous pieces planned for the event. And don't forget you will also have an opportunity to meet and talk to your Area 12 Board Members at this event.
More information and the registration form can be found
here.
We also have planned an opportunity for folks to get together and ring through several of the Spring Ring pieces on February 8th, from 2:30 to 4:00 pm at Red Hill Lutheran Church in Tustin. Please contact me if you would like to attend this "mini-event."
As always, if you need anything please feel free to contact me.

Here is the fourth and final installment of
Into the Great Unknown:
Preparing for a Handbell Event On Your Own by Genevieve Parker and myself.
Into the Great Unknown
Preparing for a Handbell Event on Your Own
Part 4: Where? What? When?
Where should I stay?
This really depends on the event and whether you will have your own transportation or if there is good transportation between your lodgings and the event. Bigger festivals will often secure a group rate for a conveniently-located hotel. This can be really reasonable, especially if you are able to connect with other ringers who are travelling solo and split costs. Call the organizers if you want to pursue this, so they can help you connect. If you're trying to save money, ask your director and local bell friends if they have any friends where the conference is who might be open to a homestay. Even if you do get a great (or free) deal staying somewhere, consider how far it is from the event venue and whether you will have any trouble getting to the event on time or heading home at the end of a long day.
What should I pack for a day full of ringing?
- Your own mallets, singing sticks, etc.
- "Real" (not photocopied) music, split back music binder/folder
- Gloves
- Pencils
- Reading glasses
- Post-it Notes
- Decent-sized refillable water bottle and snacks (festivals often have extra water, but not always vessels. They sometimes include lunch, but check to make sure and bring something to tide you over if you get hungry, because they're such physical days!)
- Comfortable clothes (especially shoes!)
- Bandages/moleskin/NexTape, ibuprofen
- If there's a dress code for the concert, don't forget those clothes. A comb or brush isn't a bad idea, either.
Scheduling tips
- Schedule your trip and time in town, leaving plenty of time for traffic and other delays. Being on the road and in another city can be very unpredictable. Locate and plan to take rest stops.
- Be realistic about what you schedule. Don't expect to be able to take a long lunch. Save the restaurant you're interested in checking out for dinner or for a different day. If you have friends you'd like to see, plan an extra day for that. You likely won't have time the day of the event. On the topic of lunch, it's a good idea to know where you will be getting it from (if it's not provided and you're not bringing a sack lunch) but have a backup for if it's too crowded.
- If you are traveling through any rural areas, take care to print or download your driving directions. If your cell service goes out, you don't want to find yourself guessing at the next turn.
Day-Of Tips
- Get plenty of sleep the night before.
- Arrive in plenty of time. Usually 30 minutes before the downbeat is sufficient. That allows for finding and setting up your bells and music, finding/using the restroom, getting a drink, and meeting some of your fellow ringers.
- If physically able, offer to help set up, move equipment, etc. Expect to stay after and help put away equipment.
- Stretch before you ring and during breaks.
- Be positive and flexible, friendly but don't talk during rehearsal unless asking a question or offering a solution.
- Let go of your mistakes in the moment. Make notes afterward of things to correct.
- Listen and often look up and around; be part of the ensemble with your conductor and fellow ringers. It's much more valuable to be immersed in the experience and to learn from visiting experts than to hit every note.
- Have fun! Take advantage of meeting people, taking classes, ringing with more advanced musicians and the guest conductor, and challenging yourself.
We hope these articles have encouraged you to venture out and try attending a bell event on your own!

SoCal Spring Ring
Clinician: Douglas Lynn
This event is sponsored by Handbell Musicians of America.
Greetings, SoCal!
The Spring Ring information and registration form is now available
here! Thank you so much for your patience with me in getting all the information together.
As a reminder: If you want to have a handbell store at the event,
I NEED YOUR HELP to make it happen. I need at least two volunteers (though hopefully more, so we can distribute the work) to staff the table before the event, during the breaks and lunch, as well as handle the sales transactions. Area 12 will provide lunch for the volunteers, so please
email me by March 15 if you're willing to help with this.
As always, individuals are welcome to attend the event, and
our clinician
Douglas Lynn
has offered to help a "pick-up choir" of individuals rehearse before the big day. Please
contact him
for more information.
See you in May!

Hi there, CenCal!
Here's a heads-up for one of the classes to be held at
Red, White, & Bells, our conference in Vegas:
Derek Nance and I are again sharing the repair and maintenance class for both Malmark and Schulmerich handbells. Please be thinking of a problem you've encountered with your bells and need some expert advice on what to do. Bring your questions and problems, let us help you solve them - sometimes with an off-the-wall solution! Also, please bring you sick bell to class for us to fix. We have ideas for maintenance you might not have thought about.
Be sure to check out all the other
class offerings, and start planning your trip to Vegas.
See you there!

Aloha and Happy New Year!
It's a new year with many handbell opportunities! One of my goals is to be out there exposing as many people as possible to our world of handbells.
Recently I had the opportunity to do an eight-week class at the University of Hawaii through their life-long learning program. We met for the first time last week. These ladies had so much fun and were so happy to have their time together, brought together by handbells.
This is why I do what I do. I am thankful for each opportunity I am able to share.
Check out all the opportunities Area 12 has waiting for you. And check out our
Red, White, & Bells Conference in Las Vegas this summer!
