Next Area 12 Board Meeting (virtual):
Budget | October 17, 2021 ••• Sunday 8 pm
Kendra Symonds
Greetings Area 12!
We have some wonderful events happening this month, with the Redding Festival in northern California, and the Bell Jubilee in the LA Metro region. If you're nearby, it's not too late to register! If you're somewhere in between, feel free to reach out to your local regional coordinator and let them know how you're doing and how they might support you.

As for me, I've been enjoying working with the Education Committee for National as we collected updated teaching resources, adjudication guidelines, and other work to support our educational outreach initiatives both locally and nationwide.

In the very near future however, I'm gearing up for baby Oscar's first plane ride as we head to Distinctly Bronze West this week!

Happy ringing!

Kendra

Red, White & Bells
Our 2022 conference, Red, White, and Bells, will be here before you know it! We have decided to allow Bronzer and Martalina to share the important information about Vegas. For those of you not familiar with Bronzer and Martalina, they are the Area 12 mascots. They have attended many a conference and have stories to tell. The mascots were lovingly made in 1998 by Norma Rose. If you see a picture of Bronzer and/or Martalina in the Twelfth Tone, on our Facebook page, or on our website, pay close attention—that means there is important information about Vegas.
Martalina here (since I do our finances, I get to talk about conference costs) – Your Vegas conference committee has been working hard. One of the most recent accomplishments was getting the new contract with UNLV signed. While some prices have gone up, they were able to negotiate the contract such that the costs to the registrants remain the same as in 2020. (The cost for individual dinner tickets have gone up by $5 to $30/dinner.) So, start saving your pennies and dollars to attend Red, White, and Bells. In summary, the costs are:
The detailed costs can be found at Registration | Handbell Musicians of America Area 12. An example total cost for someone attending the Ringers Conference, assuming registration prior to April 6, 2022, with three nights double occupancy lodging at UNLV, would be $398.48 [($20 + $300 + $90 -$25) x 1.035].

For this price, you get to work with fantastic clinicians and instructors, ring with old and new friends, and celebrate the fourth in Vegas, in all its glory. As a choir, think about planning a fundraiser. Christmas is coming—maybe ask for one of your presents to be funds that you can put towards attending the conference.

If this is your first time attending an Area 12 Conference, scholarships are available for one first time ringer and one first time director. More information about scholarships is available at Conference-Scholarships | Handbell Musicians of America Area 12. Meeting Bronzer and me is worth the $400, on its own!! (Heee Heee) I will now let Bronzer tell you about the upcoming Bell Table Talks. (Bronzer does like to talk.)
Bronzer here – Sometimes you just have questions and need the ability to talk to somebody, and then that discussion leads to more questions. So, at my suggestion, the Vegas team has set up a series of Bell Table Talks where you can have that “face to face” time. While the committee has set a general topic for each set of talks, if you have any questions about Red, White, and Bells, join us. To try and make these talks convenient for folks, there will be a weekday evening and a weekend talk covering the same topic. The information about the first set of talks is below. Information about the series and the zoom link can be found at Bell Table Talk – Fall 2021 and beyond | Handbell Musicians of America Area 12. I hope you come to the bell table and talk.

Happy October LA Metro,

I really do hope all is well with you and that you have had the opportunity to begin ringing. If not, I hope that opportunity will return soon. The past several months I have been hyping our Fall Bell Jubilee – Let’s Get Back into the Swing of Ringing. Well now is the time to make that commitment to your ringers and yourself to have some fun, learn a bit, and GET BACK INTO THE SWING OF RINGING by registering for the ½ day workshop. For HMA members or ringers associated with an HMA member organization the cost is $20 or $140 dollars for a choir. Twenty dollars is about how much it costs these days to go to lunch. We will have pastries and snacks available, and you will get to ring alongside members of LA Bronze or Cathedral Bells all while being guided by Christian Guebert in learning a song. The song was specifically chosen for the variety of opportunities to reinforce good technique and proper execution of our various articulations (SK, LV, Mart ….). So as a director myself, sometimes it takes someone else explaining to my ringers what good technique and proper execution of articulations look like for my ringers to have that “a-hah” moment.  Bell Jubilee is a great place for this. Please consider joining us and don’t forget, if you don’t want to travel, you can enjoy this event virtually.
On other event news, please put April 2, 2022, on your calendar. Our spring ring will be at Claremont United Church of Christ in Claremont, CA with Matthew Compton and Erik Der as our clinicians. The repertoire will include some fantastic pieces that can be used in church and concert settings. Four of the pieces are also part of the repertoire for our Red, White and Bells Conference in July at UNLV. I will be working with our webmaster to get the information on our website so stay tuned. I titled the spring ring, Freedom to Ring – 2022 Spring Ring to acknowledge for some, the ability to ring was taken away by COVID and by April we will, hopefully, be back in full swing with everyone having the freedom to ring. Another factor in the title was a nod to the Area 12 composition contest winner for the Vegas Conference, Fervent Freedom by Michael Mazzatenta.

A side note, if you are on Facebook, please click the follow button on the Handbell Musicians of America - Area 12 page. This will keep you informed of upcoming events and happenings within Area 12. I typically cross-post over to the LA Metro Facebook page, but we as a board are trying to focus our efforts on keeping everything on the primary Area 12 page. The Area 12 page includes our upcoming events, so it is a great way to tell your friends about handbell events. (You simply invite them to the event, and they will get the info.) Also if you indicate that you are interested or going to an event, you will get reminders about the event.

As always if you have any questions or need anything please feel free to reach out to me.

Hi there, SoCal!

I hope you had a good summer and are looking forward to a good fall with lots of bell ringing. My church bell choir has been rehearsing all month with eight ringers (nine, including me), one of whom is new. We're taking it easy for now and plan for our first service date to be Reformation Sunday (Oct 31). We're rehearsing all together in the sanctuary, but with the outside doors open (when it’s not too smoky, that is), ventilation running at maximum, masked, and socially distant, playing from music stands (so no bell changes!). It's working for us now, though we do still have to figure out what formation we will be able to play in by the end of October.

I have good news—
we have a date for the 2022 SoCal Spring Ring!
Go mark your calendars for Saturday, May 14. It'll be at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Oceanside, with Douglas Lynn directing. We'll be using three pieces from Red, White, & Bells, Area 12's 2022 conference in Las Vegas. I'll be updating and preparing the full information packet, including registration forms, this month, so check the November Twelfth Tone for that info.

In the meantime, please stay safe and healthy. As always, don't hesitate to contact me if you need anything handbell-related. I'm here to serve YOU!

My Best,
-Michèle

Howdy!
Tintab's Bell Jam and Bagels workshop was a blast! We had 13 people besides Tintab attend, six from communities farther than 50 miles away from Reno. In the morning we shook the dust off and brushed up on our rusty ringing skills. We also reviewed the many different articulations bells have in their arsenal with Kevin McChesney's arrangement of "Old MacDonald" that uses no less than 13 articulations in it's finale section of 53 measures. Whew!

The weather was beautiful with smoke-less skies, so we ate our yummy bagel brunch (who knew there were so many different ways to top a bagel?!) on the church's picnic tables in the park. At the end of brunch, we were treated to a very short concert given by our local educators who played Dr. Jim Smith's piece, "Reno Boogie". Afterward, we enjoyed ourselves by sight reading through several pieces. It was wonderful to get back to ringing beautiful bell music together! Here's to many more!

Hey Bay Area!

Mark your calendars now for the 2022 Bay Area Spring Ring. We are excited to welcome Sondra Tucker to the podium! (Read more about Sondra here.)

Spring Ring, a Saturday jam packed with classes (stay tuned for class details), massed ringing rehearsals, a lunch time solo concert, and a final concert that features the massed ringing selections along with individual performances by some of the groups in attendance and the Intense Ring Ensemble, is for both individuals and groups. The Intense Ring (Friday evening and Saturday) offers individual ringers an opportunity to do a deeper dive into a more challenging repertoire with a nationally renowned composer, conductor, and clinician.

This year's repertoire includes some classic favorites as well as two new pieces slotted for publication this fall—most are available in both 2-3 or 3-5(6) octave ranges, suitable for a wide range of ensemble sizes. You can see the full repertoire list for both the Spring Ring and Intense Ring below. We think these pieces will be a great fit for your programming this season!

As in previous years, the 2022 Bay Area Spring Ring will be held two weeks after Easter: Friday and Saturday, April 29-30. I'll be leading the reading sessions, and I hope to see you there!

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?

Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.

To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
