While some parts of our area are still hunkered down due to a rise in cases, other parts are beginning to open up due to the availability of the Covid vaccine. Whether you are still on hiatus, meeting virtually, or having socially distanced rehearsals, Area 12 is here for you! We will be sending out information soon on our election for Area 12 Secretary, Treasurer, and Chair-Elect. This will be our first electronic ballot so look out for instructions on how to vote. Members of your board will also be staffing an informational booth at the virtual California All-State Music Education Conference in mid-February. We are continuing our Bell Table Talk series and your local areas may also be hosting virtual events. Some of our regions are preparing for Spring Rings as local ordinances allow. So check out our event calendar for what's happening in your area. And always, we hope you are staying safe and healthy.
Happy ringing,
Kendra

Greetings, CenCal!
Are your handbells starting to ring again? Have you formed a 4-in-hand quartet, which is super easy to ring spread out with no bell sharing? Have you taken the plunge to solo ring? Those are classes I'll be teaching at Seminar this summer, and I'd love to see some of you participate! Meanwhile, please tell me your frustrations and successes so I may share encouragements with others. Please tell me your stories! If I can help, I'm ready and willing to mentor you. (...please...give me something to do...)
Christine

19th Annual Sierra Spring Ring:
Digital Edition
Saturday, March 13, 2021
9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. PST

|
|
Tintabulations is excited to announce that we are still exploring this internet thing-a-ma-jig and are offering a new 19th Annual Sierra Spring Ring: Digital Edition! Thanks to a few tech savvy Tintabbers and a generous rehearsal space, we are creating an entertaining and educational online event with ample audience participation. Ring along at home to our pre-recorded massed ring rehearsals and concert, check out the tips & tricks from each Tintab member/bell position (we’ll help you really “think outside the box”), and join us for a live Zoom study hall (ask us anything, and hang out with friends!). We will not be creating a virtual bell choir, so no need to stress about recording yourself or even getting out of your pajamas! Just ring along from home either by yourself or grab a few of your socially distanced bell friends!
Go to https://tintabulations.com/ to get the most up to date Sierra Spring Ring information. This event is free, but donations are appreciated.

Hi there, SoCal --
It looks like we're going to be unable to meet in person for a Spring Ring again this year. However, we are planning to have the event in 2022! (I have just confirmed that our clinician, Douglas Lynn, is still happy to be our clinician.) The current plan is to use the same music as we were planning to use in 2020. I'll know more later in the year, of course, so watch this space for news in August or September. (Please also cross your fingers & keep praying that the pandemic gets under control as quickly as possible!)
Meanwhile, I would like to offer some virtual workshops—but I need your help for that. Send me an email and let me know what clinician(s) you'd like to invite and what topic(s) you'd like to learn. (My email is SoCal.Area12@HandbellMusicians.org.) I'll do my best to make it happen!
And, of course, please feel absolutely free to contact me about anything handbell-related. Remember that I'm here for YOU.
Please stay safe & well out there.
My Best,
-Michèle

We received the following news from P.L. Grove and Handbell Ventures.

2021 Bay Area Spring Ring Cancelled
This has been quite an unexpected and crazy year for musicians everywhere. Handbell Ventures was sad to have to cancel the 2020 Spring Ring, but we were looking forward to shifting our plans forward to 2021. Here we are a year later, and we find ourselves concerned about our event possibly being a COVID-19 super spreader. People’s safety is first and foremost in our minds, so for that reason, we have decided not to hold the 2021 Bay Area Spring Ring. We realize this decision will be disappointing to many, and we hope your handbell group can find ways to continue ringing.
If you are not yet a member of Handbell Musicians of America, you can start receiving information and benefits by joining online here:
And if you need general assistance with getting your group back to ringing, please do not hesitate to contact us at Handbell Ventures (info@handbellventures.org).
We hope to see you at the Bay Area Spring Ring in 2022, if not before. Until that time, please stay safe.
P.L. Grove, President, Handbell Ventures

As I write this article, news has come out that Governor Newsome is lifting the state-wide stay at home order in California - Hallelujah. As a director of a community group, it has been difficult to make those decisions to rehearse or not to rehearse. Trying to balance my ringer’s needs and my need to ring for our mental health, and the physical health of the ringers and their families is tough. During the months prior to Christmas we did rehearse, socially distanced and masked. No one in the smaller ensemble group is apt to go much beyond their family/work/school bubbles, and everyone felt comfortable with the precautions we were taking.
I am glad to hear that the Sierra Spring Ring is going forward in a virtual format and encourage those in the LA Metro Area to participate. As I mentioned last month, Area 1 is looking at having a virtual massed ring event, similar to Christmas Handbells later in the spring. With these two events on the horizon, I really cannot come up with something unique to the LA Metro Area, so I have made the decision to concentrate on planning for the Fall.
This Spring as a director and ringer, I have decided to concentrate on improving my rehearsal and practice techniques. For my group we will be working on improving our internal rhythm clocks and subdivision, as well as “problem solving” (e.g., do I need to weave, do I need to 4-in-hand, do I need to displace a bell to make the most of the music). Whether you are an elite ringer or just starting out, these items can always be improved upon. First up is being able to self-identify if something is on the beat or behind the beat. I will let you know how it goes. If you have any suggestions on how I can help my group subdivide better, let me know.
As always if you need anything feel free to reach out.
Sharon

Teachers, would you like the use of a 3-octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?
Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.
To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
To learn more about the responsibilities and procedures for participating in this program, click here.
