Election will open on Friday, March 5, 2021
and close on Monday, April 5, 2021.
This will be our very first electronic election in Area 12! Because we approved the by-law changes in 2018, this will allow us to have an electronic election. We will save so much money on paper and stamps—as well as help the environment—and get quicker results for our election.
The election process itself will be hosted on the Handbell Musicians of America server and can be accessed at this link
You need to be a current member and have a website account on Handbell Musicians of America to access this ballot (sub-memberships and student memberships do NOT have voting privileges).

Director as Teacher—The Next Step | March 14, 2021 |

SUNDAY, March 14, 2021 1:30 - 5:30 PDT via Zoom - yes, the day we start Daylight Saving Time!!!
Instructors Barbara Walsh and Tessique Houston will continue the concepts covered in Director as Teacher, and will use the same music. Subjects to be covered include:
- Conducting Patterns & Gestures
- Audiation
- Rehearsal Planning (including how to teach some bell technique and articulations).
$30 for HMA members/$40 for non-members
$40 for all registrations that come in after March 7, 2021
Attendance will be capped at 23, with a waiting list if needed. (so sign up soon!)
All are welcome! If you are a ringer that just wants to have better insight into what director's are thinking, please feel free to 'audit' the class. You do not need to have attended the previous workshop to attend this one.

Thanks to a few tech savvy Tintabbers and a generous rehearsal space, we are creating an entertaining and educational online event with ample audience participation. Ring along at home to our pre-recorded massed ring rehearsals and concert, check out the tips & tricks from each Tintab member/bell position (we’ll help you really “think outside the box”), and join us for a live Zoom study hall (ask us anything, and hang out with friends!). We will not be creating a virtual bell choir, so no need to stress about recording yourself or even getting out of your pajamas! Hope all is well, LA Metro,
In a recent Handbell Happy Hour, a college director from back East mentioned that they are getting fewer ringers applying for their choirs, and the ringers they get are not of the caliber in the past. He did not elaborate on what he meant by “caliber”, but it did cause me to think about what we as directors of youth pass on to the colleges.
You may not realize it, but in the last few years the LA Metro Area has had three college directors retire (and that is just what I know of). I reached out to two of the three that I know personally, as well as one current director, and asked them what “bad habits” youth are bringing to their programs. I then asked the same question to some students of those directors.
My original thought was that I would be able to share a few funny and a few serious technical things knowing that I could make sure to correct these items in my youth ringers and also the rest of my choir. And I will share some of that …… next month.
What I was really touched by was the response from the ringers.

“The one habit that she helped me break that has made an impact on not only my ringing, but throughout my entire life, was a mental and emotional habit: quieting the voices. In solo ringing, one must always be thinking in the moment and where the body and melody need to go next. There is no room for negative thinking, fear, or insecurity. I remember reading through a book called “The Musician’s Soul”. There were certain chapters in the book that she and I reviewed together. I remember one topic that was very instrumental to my growth: vulnerability. Vulnerability is necessary for personal growth, as well as quieting those voices. One has to be open to receive feedback, to learn from mistakes, and to build empathy, not sympathy. Her mentoring stays with me, even today, and I am blessed she was invested in not only breaking through technical habits, but also the mental and emotional habits as well.” |
“I started as quite the introvert, and my ringing style reflected that. Our director encouraged us all to come out of our shells a bit, and that helped. I found myself more comfortable adopting a more musical and expressive style.
There is also one thing she (a different director) helped me with that is not technique-related at all -- my allergy medicine! She remarked that I was sniffling too much while ringing, and that it was distracting. Yeah, and gross! I tried a variety of different allergy medicines and found one that works like a charm. I had been living with mild but annoying allergies, but thanks to her suggestion, I have no more allergy symptoms!”

What struck me was the non-music impact that we as directors can have on folks. Yes, the music and technique etc. are important, but the other impacts probably last longer. I still remember my first director arranging car rides for me to and from rehearsals for a span of about 6 months because he knew that bells were my “in” to church and if I did not ring, I most likely would not be at church.
So, directors – Even if you were not a music major and don’t have all the latest technique information; know that you can impact the lives of your young ringers in ways that will last a lifetime.

Hi there, SoCal!
I really hope you are all doing well, taking care of yourselves and others, and looking forward to being able to meet together in groups again before too long. I know I'm encouraged by the increase in vaccine availability and distribution. While I'm not currently in the vaccination queue, several people I know have already gotten one dose, and some have gotten both. I am cautiously optimistic!
Even so, please remember that we are NOT having a Spring Ring this year. Rather, we will have it NEXT year (2022), with Douglas Lynn as our clinician, and using the same music we had planned to use in 2020. As is our custom in Area 12 Conference years, the event will also focus on preparing all of us to participate in the Conference -- which will be in Las Vegas in July 2022.
At this time, our national organization is still planning to have an in-person National Seminar in Phoenix this July. But did you know that there will be not one, not two, but THREE performers from Area 12 concertizing there? The lovely & amazing Christine Anderson will be giving a solo concert; Sonos Handbell Ensemble (from the SF Bay Area, and with which group I play) will give a concert; AND Cathedral Bells from Orange (in the LA Metro Region) will be giving a joint concert with Bells of the Cascades (from Portland, OR). What's more, ALL of these concerts—and others—will be livestreamed during the event, so even if you can't attend, you can still watch the concerts live!
How exciting is that?!

Aloha
As we have just gone into Tier 3 in Hawaii and our case counts are dropping. The state is allowing more businesses to open and gatherings to go up some. My church handbell group is going strong with social distancing, masks, and proper cleaning. As Hawaii is always a challenge with ringers moving off the island, now is no different. Many families are moving to be closer to family or due to losing their jobs; this can make it hard on a handbell choir. We modify the best we can and do what we can. Our ringing looks different: we are learning recording and more tech to get our music out to our church and the community. It feels good being able to ring and share our music with our congregation (online). It helps us feel there is something normal, but different in our lives. I wish you all to remain vigilant and healthy.

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?
Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.
To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
