Concert Creation
Instructor P.L. Grove says, “I'm asking (and answering) the question: what makes a great concert.” Come pick her mind to see what she thinks!
Instructor Kathy Fink says, “Playing Devil's advocate—why do we want to ring one hour solo (or small ensemble) concerts? Is this the best way to move our art forward? Who is benefiting from the solo/small ensemble ringing? This needs to be resolved in your mind before you spend hours developing a program. Be honest with yourself. Some film footage from the Legacy Tour will be shown for your consideration with a disclaimer that perhaps I was not moving the art forward but dealing with the history only for already confirmed handbell enthusiasts.”
Tips and Tricks/Recovery
How do you keep focus? How do you prep yourself for recovering from mistakes (because they will happen)? Come learn strategies our panelists use to help them to stay focused and recover.

Adapting music for a smaller group
Are you planning to restart handbells, but need to look for new repertoire as the folks available have decreased and/or need to utilize existing repertoire? Then you need to come to the panel discussion with Cheryl Woldseth (Bay Bells Ensemble) and KatRyn Howell (Campanile) as we explore how to look for potential repertoire in your filing cabinet, or on the piano rack. Discussion will include how to assign such a piece for ensemble, and how to assign ringers to those assignments.
Have a specific piece you'd like to see assigned for a smaller group? Please submit it to membership.area12@handbellmusicians.org by August 7 for presentation consideration. (Include title, composer/arranger, publisher, and desired ensemble size. (registered participants only)
Master Class
Submit a video of yourself, or small ensemble, and our panel will give you feedback. You will receive a lot of beneficial advice on how to keep the good you’ve done, and improve the places that need improvement!

If you were at National Seminar, I am sure you walked away feeling very excited to return to actual ringing. It was great to be around people who share the love and passion for ringing bells as I do. The joy in the rooms was vibrant as people learned new techniques and enjoyed the varied timbres and techniques of the handbells and handchimes. In Area 12, we feel that next summer’s Red, White, and Bells Conference in Las Vegas will be just as exciting!
|
|
Red, White and Bells, includes a Youth Conference and Conference Choir on July 2 and 3, as
well as the Ringers Conference July 3 - 5. The Ringer’s Conference has a great slate of classes, some of which will be taught by some of the instructors at National Seminar. These classes range in topics from Bell Trees to Bell Maintenance; Music Theory to Bell Articulations; Conducting Skills to Rehearsal Planning; and from Reading Sessions to Tracks, Massed Ringing by division and all together.
We are thrilled to offer a plethora of different topics and experiences. The three main clinicians are Stevie Berryman, featured Conference Conductor; Barbara Walsh, Youth Conference and Main Conference Division C Conductor; and P.L. Grove, Conference Choir Conductor. For information regarding the Red, White, and Bells please go to
We look forward to seeing many of you there!

Hi there, my SoCal peeps --
I have just returned from National Seminar in Phoenix, AZ, and I am so inspired! Not only was it amazing to see all my handbell friends from near and far in person, but all of the performances were incredible, too. Area 12 was well-represented on that front, with the always-stunning Christine Anderson opening the event with a Wednesday after-lunch concert, plus Sonos on Thursday evening performing a nearly flawless (if I can say so myself) and very challenging program, and Cathedral Bells (with Bells of the Cascades) closing the event on Saturday night with the immersive Lumen Fidei by BOC’s director, Matthew Compton. Tears of joy still come to my eyes when I remember that piece — it truly was the very best way to end this Seminar, especially after the 15+ months we’ve all been through.
|
|
And then there were the classes — I was also honored to be able to teach at nearly every session, though my voice is still about a Perfect Fourth lower and gruffer than it usually is from talking so much! — everybody I heard from had good things to say about all the amazing topics offered this year. From fun learning games, to bell trees, to weaving, to advanced four-in-hand, to concert creation, and beyond, there was literally something for everybody.
I am so excited for my church group to start again in September. I bought a “Wheel of Musical Mayhem” from Stevie Berryman’s company (Truly Horrible Things) and I can’t wait to use it in our rehearsals! ::insert evil laugh here::
Stay tuned for next month’s newsletter, where I hope to have new dates and more information for our 2022 Spring Ring.
In the meantime, stay safe, have fun, and keep the music in your heart.
My best,
-Michèle

Fall is just around the corner. By the time you read this, my community group, ensemble edition, will have just finished their first concert in twenty (20) months. The title of the program was How Can I Keep from Ringing. We played Mitchell Eithun’s arrangement of How Can I Keep from Singing, as Mitchell and Bruna Marinho had performed it on Facebook, with singing bells. I am fortunate to be in south Orange County and our ensemble was able to start ringing in March, socially distanced and masked and now that everyone is vaccinated without masks. Being able to ring was truly a blessing for me and kept me sane.
All the verses of the song touch my heart. I could pontificate on each of the verses and how they relate to ringing, but I will let you look them up and see how fitting they are. However, I will share the second verse.
|
|
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear it's music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

For many of us, handbells give us that soul soothing and satisfying place with God. It certainly does for me, whether doing a solo, playing with my community group, or playing with my church group.
While many folks have not been able to ring for quite a while and still may not be able to, know in your heart that you will be back doing what we love. Here in the LA Metro Region, we have an event that will help you get back into the swing of ringing – Bell Jubilee. [Bell Jubilee 2021 | Handbell Musicians of America Area 12] There are two dates (October 16 and October 30), two places (N. Hollywood and Laguna Beach), two phenomenal groups that are going to help out, and even a virtual option. There is NO preparation and NO need to bring anything to the event! (After providing 5 octaves of bells, 3 octaves of chimes, mallets and a bell tree to the National Seminar in Arizona, this aspect of an event is VERY appealing to me.)
Christian Guebert is our clinician. Members of LA Bronze and St. John’s Cathedral Bells will be amongst the participants and will provide “mini moments” of learning. I have often learned the most about proper ringing technique when I have rung next to somebody better than myself. In addition, when Carol Pickford came down and rang with us, someone said “We just ring better with Carol here”. It will be a wonderful time to fill your soul with ringing and fellowship. A side benefit of this event for groups, is that you will walk away with the ability to perform Hart Morris’ “For the Beauty of the Earth” with only 1 or maybe 2 more rehearsals. Attendance at this event is open to everyone. You do not have to live in LA, Ventura, or Orange Counties to participate. If you want to fly in from the east coast, come on over!
For those that may not be ready for an in-person event, or who can’t make it to the in-person event, there is a virtual option. You will be right there with the group in Laguna Beach getting all the great information. The virtual session will be moderated by Michèle Sharik, so you will have access to an awesome ringer who can answer your questions.
Please tell your handbell ringing friends to come to Bell Jubilee and fill their souls with ringing!

Hey Bay Area!
I hope everyone has had an enjoyable Summer. Some of us just returned from a wonderful National Seminar experience in Glendale, Arizona. I always appreciate the opportunity to see other ensembles perform and to learn from some of the best teachers. During the concerts, one thing I noticed was how each ensemble had a different setup. Some ensembles were masked and spaced out and others played two rows. And some played in their normal configuration. Whatever your setup may be this Fall, I know you will make gorgeous music. I hope you will continue to share and post your videos!
Oh! Thinking about attending Red, White & Bells in Las Vegas next Summer? Check out the Conference Choir directed by P.L. Grove!!

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?
Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.
