Upcoming Area 12 Board Meeting (virtual):
Fall 2021 | September 18 - 19, 2021 ••• Saturday 10 - 6; Sunday 12 - 6
Kendra Symonds
Greetings Area 12!
While many view January as a time for new beginnings, I've always felt like September is when I'm ready for a fresh start. I suspect it's because I've always worked in education and the new school year has just begun, full of endless possibilities and new friends to make. Of course, there are students to enlighten and enrich with the joy of music making as well. It also seems like we might just dare to hope that the pandemic may yet soon be behind us. I'm looking forward to directing handbells again, with my students starting in a few weeks, and returning to my community group in January. It will feel so good to get together to ring again in all these different circles. I'm sure we are all ready to get things going once again and to take what we've learned at various virtual workshops and implement them with our choirs!

Meanwhile, your Area 12 Board is continuing to prepare for a smashing conference next summer. I encourage you all to start planning now to attend Red, White, and Bells in Las Vegas over the July 4th weekend in 2022. After all, who wouldn't want to ring bells with this precious little one? Oscar and I will be there, and we hope to see you all there, too!

Bells in Education
Hello Handbell Friends!

I hope many of you are looking forward to rehearsals starting back up this fall. I am so excited to hear the many stories of programs that are coming back safely and all the people that are making music with bells once again.

Area 12 has been getting our bell and chime loan sets ready to go for the fall. They have been cleaned, adjusted, and polished, and are available for schools that need to borrow handbell sets. We still have a number of bell and chime sets available, so please email education.area12@handbellmusicians.org if you are interested in borrowing a set. Please also contact your local schools to let them know that we have a loan program available.

Our first post-COVID loan set is on its way and the students are eager to start ringing this year!

I wish you all happy ringing,

Beth Mays

Hey there, SoCal --

Wow, it's September already! Can you believe it? It seems like just yesterday it was March... of 2020. The past year and a half has been like "blursday" every day. My excitement for the start of my church group's handbell season is tempered by the uncertainty of whether we'll be able to meet for rehearsals in person or not. My church is having in-person worship, but with masks & distancing. We'd have to do the same for the bell choir rehearsals. My group is thinking amongst themselves about whether or not to return in just a couple of weeks. Fortunately, I have a good library of everything from 2 octave through 5 octave full choir music, plus a bunch of 8- and 12-bell music bought over the past year. I know that I'll be ready for whatever we decide to do.

How about you? I'd love to hear what you're planning to do this fall.

Last month, I promised to let you know the date for our 2022 SoCal Spring Ring. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to nail down a date with our venue yet. But as soon as we do, I'll let you know what it is.

OK, I think that's it for this month. Remember: if you have any questions, comments, or even suggestions, please feel free to contact me anytime at SoCal.Area12@HandbellMusicians.org. I'd love to hear from you!

My Best,
-Michèle

You may have had some or all of the above thoughts—and more—depending on your function in the handbell world. I find as a director that this very busy time, while exciting in some ways, is also full of anxiety. So the thought of attending a fall workshop can be overwhelming.

But it is, in fact, that anxiety and excitement that led to the design of Bell Jubilee – Let’s Get Back into the Swing of Ringing. There is nothing to bring except people. (We request that participants wear clean gloves. If you don’t have any, just let me know.) There is no need to schlep bells, pads, tables etc. to the workshop. There is no music to prepare for the workshop—just register and show up!
At the workshop everyone will get to refresh/hone their skills under the baton of Christian Guebert and be taught/ring next to members of LA Bronze and Cathedral Bells. The group will work on a fall appropriate song, For the Beauty of the Earth arranged by Hart Morris. One idea is that if a majority of your group attends the workshop, with one or two more rehearsals you could play the song in church. In fact, there will be a drawing to win the reproducible book, Fill Your Year with Ringing, which has eight songs arranged by Hart Morris. My hope is that the workshop will put some of the beginning of the year anxiety at bay and actually get directors and ringers excited to be ringing again. If you have fewer ringers, fear not, I have it on good authority that the piece would be quite lovely with a piano taking the bass clef part to accompany bells playing D5 through C7.

This year there are three options:
  1. October 16, 2021, in North Hollywood in person,
  2. October 30, 2021, in Laguna Beach, in person, and
  3. a virtual option on October 30. For the virtual option you will need to buy the music and supply the bells, etc. We plan on the virtual option being much like Christmas Handbells, though there will be no recording of the piece.

So, you may be thinking, "I will never play For the Beauty of the Earth, why should I/my ringers attend?" We have specifically picked this piece for the variety of “mini moments of learning” that it has. We will be reviewing mallet technique, what a proper stroke looks like, phrasing, etc. I have found that if the pressure of performance is gone, ringers will try something new! Also, directors – you can have the experience of seeing what your ringers see, and how a fantastic director brings a group from ground zero to a polished piece.

I really hope that you will consider participating in Bell Jubilee. As Michèle Sharik, SoCal Regional Coordinator and I were talking about the event, she was like, “Wow this sounds like fun, maybe I’ll send my group!”

As always if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Hey Bay Area!

Mark your calendars now for the 2022 Bay Area Spring Ring. We are excited to welcome Sondra Tucker to the podium! (Read more about Sondra here.)

Spring Ring, a Saturday jam packed with classes (stay tuned for class details), massed ringing rehearsals, a lunch time solo concert, and a final concert that features the massed ringing selections along with individual performances by some of the groups in attendance and the Intense Ring Ensemble, is for both individuals and groups. The Intense Ring (Friday evening and Saturday) offers individual ringers an opportunity to do a deeper dive into a more challenging repertoire with a nationally renowned composer, conductor, and clinician.

This year's repertoire includes some classic favorites as well as two new pieces slotted for publication this fall—most are available in both 2-3 or 3-5(6) octave ranges, suitable for a wide range of ensemble sizes. You can see the full repertoire list for both the Spring Ring and Intense Ring below. We think these pieces will be a great fit for your programming this season!

As in previous years, the 2022 Bay Area Spring Ring will be held two weeks after Easter: Friday and Saturday, April 29-30. I'll be leading the reading sessions, and I hope to see you there!

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?

Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.

To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
