As we enter fall, I want to reflect on the success and camaraderie of the recent Fall Conference.
It was incredible to see the strong turnout and takeaways from this year's outstanding lineup of speakers. They delved into important industry topics with rigor and relevance.
Of course, this Conference wouldn't have been possible without the sponsors, steering committee, and the staff at the Hilton Knoxville and TTA. To everyone who contributed to this success, I want to say "thank you."
In the spirit of giving thanks, we can not forget the Tennessee Trucking Foundation's annual raffle. The Foundation has been tirelessly giving to Tennessee for the past 30 years by promoting safety and education throughout the state.
I invite you to enter not only for an opportunity to win great cash prizes but also to help the Foundation continue to make a difference for years to come.
As we embrace the changing seasons, I hope you treasure the moments spent with loved ones. Thank you again for your support and everything you do for our industry.

Averitt Ranked #1 LTL Carrier in the Nation by Shippers
COOKEVILLE, TN, October 31, 2023--Averitt has been named the "Top Overall LTL Carrier" in the nation by shippers in MASTIO's 19th annual industry survey. This top recognition, driven directly by feedback from shippers, underscores Averitt's commitment to excellence in freight transportation.
In addition to this highest honor in the survey, Averitt was also ranked as the “Most Recommended LTL Carrier” and “Top Inter-Regional LTL Carrier.” The factors that determine the awards include overall value, dependability, technology, ease of business interactions, on-time performance, customer service, and the professionalism of drivers.
Together, these three highest-ranked recognitions serve as a confirmation from shippers that Averitt’s service quality metrics are top-of-industry.
"We are honored to receive these recognitions from the shipper community," said Barry Blakely, Averitt’s president and chief operating officer. "The results from the study are a direct reflection of the trust and confidence our customers place in us, and the dedication and hard work of our associates who consistently deliver on our promise of excellence."
For this year's survey, MASTIO interviewed more than 1,600 shippers around the nation, resulting in over 5,000 observations. The study provides insights into the factors shippers consider when choosing carriers and their perceptions of the carriers' overall value and loyalty.
“Our yearly analysis dives deep into the collective experiences shippers have with their carriers, focusing on aspects like customer service, technological advancements, reliability, and the overall ease of business interactions,” said Kevin Huntsman, MASTIO’s president. “With their #1 Overall ranking, Averitt continues to stand out, showcasing its unwavering commitment to fostering robust relationships with shippers.”
Averitt has received numerous top honors in the survey throughout the years. The company also earned the title of 'Most Recommended LTL Carrier' in 2021.
Additional service awards Averitt has earned recently, include:
- LTL Carrier of the Year (GEODIS)
- Regional LTL Carrier of the Year (Uber Freight)
- Five 2023 Quest for Quality Awards (Logistics Management)

Every Item that we touch and purchase at the local store had a complex journey making it to the shelf. This journey was planned and carried out by professionals in the transportation and logistics industry. With all the essential goods that trucking is responsible for safely delivering, it’s important to recognize that transportation and logistics is the backbone of our country. The transportation industry has many different modes by which it transports these goods, but the trucking sector is the most important. That’s because, according to the American Trucking Association, commercial vehicles transport over 72% off all the country’s freight tonnage.
If you are in the industry, you recognize the importance of staying up to date. The transportation and logistics world are fast paced and there is a lot of variability that cannot be controlled as goods are transported between manufacturers and consumers. For transportation managers to stay effective and efficient at successfully transporting the country’s freight, they have to recognize and deal with unique challenges.
There will continue to be supply chain pressures including rising costs, but most experts are confident because of the underlying demand and the industry’s ability to handle price increases. Truck driving jobs and trucks are now more in demand than ever before. As more fleets focus on operations, more job opportunities will open, and the industry will be able to keep up with the demand.
As changes occur, it is important to develop and maintain a professional safety program. A good Safety Manager must be aware of changes in regulations, people, equipment, and the technology surrounding these to make the safety program more meaningful and set a course for the company that makes sense to everyone.
