Healthy on the Highway: Managing & Preventing Illness on the Road

As if being sick isn’t bad enough, being sick on the road is even worse. It’s no fun being sick in a moving truck with several miles remaining to get to your delivery. You shouldn’t drive when you’re unwell. Know your limits, don’t ignore your body’s alarm system, and don’t put yourself or others in danger if you’re too sick to react to certain situations. If you feel bad and are sick, it's best to park it. Find a safe place to stop, preferably a good truck stop, and notify your family and your dispatch immediately. Remember, DOT can and will shut you down and place you out of service if you are too sick to be driving.

Get proper sleep. Your body needs quality sleep to keep its immune system strong. The exact amount varies by individual, but following your body’s ‘internal clock’ is a great place to start.

Choose healthy meals, snacks, and drinks when you’re on the road so you reduce the likelihood of getting sick. Selecting healthy trucker-friendly snacks will reduce the amount of unhealthy fast food you eat, which will help fuel your body with energy to fight off illness.

Take Supplements. Being on the road all the time can make it a little harder to get all your necessary vitamins and nutrients. Try a multivitamin every day to boost your immune system and help keep you healthy. Or, you can choose supplements based on what is lacking in your diet.

Stay well hydrated. Many illnesses are the result of dehydration, and thirst is a big sign. Keep a water bottle by your side and fill it up throughout the day so that it is readily available.

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 30 seconds, and when you’re on the road away from soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing 60-90 percent alcohol.

Be alert at truck stops. With drivers congregating from around the country, even the cleanest stops can become places where germs spread easily. Wear flip-flops if you shower, sanitize your hands immediately after fueling, and be smart about your interactions at truck stops and rest stops.

Get recommended vaccinations. According to the CDC, annual flu shots are your best protection against the latest seasonal strains of the flu virus. Consult your doctor about any concerns you have. Most companies have a medical professional you can speak to for free at any time or schedule a virtual visit from anywhere. It’s also a good idea to have a kit of common remedies, just stay away from those that cause drowsiness or impair judgment.

If you’re feeling sick, know that you can make the call to shut down. Safety First!
