Popcorn with the Pope: Oratory Film Series

In 1995, 100 years after the birth of cinema, the Vatican compiled a list of the most significant films, with entries varying from the somewhat lighthearted “The Wizard of Oz” (1939) to the challenging arthouse “Seventh Seal” (1957). However, what they all shared in common was that each explored something fundamental about the human condition, such as religious faith, love, suffering, pursuit of justice, morality, and ultimate meaning.

Using this list as an inspiration, Fr Anthony and parishioners Camille Branda and Sam Centore have chosen films significant to each of them based also on this criteria. Each session will begin with a brief introduction to the film followed by the showing of it in its entirety. (All films are under 90 minutes). Afterwards, there will be a moderated discussion.

Popcorn and soft drinks will be available, but feel free to bring your own snacks and drinks (hard or soft) to share.

September 25: “Angels with Dirty Faces” (1938)

October 23: “Winter Light” (1963)

November 6: “My Octopus Teacher” (2020)

January 8: TBD

All showings will be on Wednesdays at 7pm in ABVM Hall.

Adult Faith Formation - Scripture Study

For the October gathering, Br. Andy will be the guest presenter.
