An evening with local poets
Lampshade Poets
Thursday, Nov. 9 7-8:30pm Free@JAM
In 2012, David Celone couldn't find a poetry reading group in the Upper Valley area, so he started his own. The group met at Long River Studios Gallery in Lyme, NH, and Lampscapes in WRJ, hence the "Lampshade Poets." The poets moved to the Hotel Coolidge and Café Renée until the pandemic forced a closure. Until now... Two of the original poets, Janet Watton and Pam Ahlen, are bringing the Lampshades back – this time to JAM! Open to all Lampshaders and any poets interested in reading their original work.
JAM will record this event.

Walk with her
Poet Madeline May Kunin, aka Vermont's governor from 1985 to 1991, read from Walk With Me, her new book of poems, at the Norwich Bookstore. "I wasn't sure I was a poet when I started writing," said Kunin, 90. "As a politician, you're more of an extrovert, but as a poet, I became more of an introvert. You spend time alone and think. Not that politicians never think, but sometimes that seems true," she said. Produced by Celeste Pfeiffer and Jan Abbott for JAM

(More) Delights
The Norwich Bookstore's on a poetry roll, bringing New York Times bestselling author Ross Gay to Norwich with his follow-up collection to The Book of Delights, Inciting Joy and four books of poetry. A Guggenheim winner and Indiana Univ. professor, Gay is a founder of the Bloomington Community Orchard, a non-profit, free-fruit-for-all food justice and joy project. Two Hanover High students treated White River to opera last month. Arlo Philip sang 'Bright is the Ring of Words' by Vaughn Williams. Elizabeth Chambers performed 'Within Thy Heart' by Amy Beach. The occasion? A JAM-hosted screening of Passion in a Pandemic. This new documentary about teaching opera to Hanover High students during Covid by Nora Jacobson of Norwich is airing on PBS. "Every time I see the film, I just get so happy because the kids are so alive," said White River Indie Film Festival co-founder Jacobson in a post-screening Q&A.
