We spent over a year saving up for a milestone getaway- one week in paradise, at a resort with a name known across the Caribbean and a reputation as old as the island itself.
We weren’t first-time travelers. We’re long-time loyalists. We know what quality looks like, and more importantly, what care feels like.
But here’s the thing no one tells you until you live it:
Even paradise can disappoint you.
Not because of a single failure, but because of dozens of small signals that no one is paying attention.
- Beaches rendered unusable due to a barrage of seaweed, and no effort made to restore them
- Pools closed with no notice, on the busiest days
- Staff who seemed tired, unsupported, untrained- not unkind, just unempowered
- A historic property coasting on its name, rather than delivering on its promise
- A stunning setting with zero storytelling, zero spark, and no soul
And yet...
There were glimmers of what could have been.
A kind concierge. A fast housekeeper. A manager who tried to right the wrong.
But here’s the truth we forget to say out loud:
A good moment here or there can’t redeem a system that isn’t set up to care.
This is a wake-up call to anyone in the service business — especially those in hospitality:
- If your team isn’t trained, they can’t deliver.
- If your property isn’t maintained, it can’t impress.
- If your loyal guests leave disappointed, they may never come back, and they may never tell you why, but they will tell everyone they know.
We almost didn’t tell this story.
My husband and I, we’re not into callouts, hashtags, or drama.
But silence helps no one.
Feedback is an act of care.
So is truth. So is candor.
If you’re running a business, a hotel, or even a single shift- pay attention. Empower your people. Don’t take trust for granted.
One bad experience can cost you a customer.
But one honest voice can help save your reputation.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. what's one thing you feel hospitality should be mindful of and work to improve? Any recent hero or zero moments? write to me and let's brainstorm together on how to celebrate these, or on ways we can improve them!
