Hero Moment:

The Candy Machine Effect

At one of my client sites, there is an automatic candy dispenser parked right by the leader’s office door. It sits alone on a shelving unit, always stocked with M&Ms in flavors you did not even know existed, including pretzel M&Ms.

It is a small thing, but it is genius. I had the same exact one, over a decade ago, and also used it in my office.

That little candy machine draws a steady stream of visitors. People stop in to say hello, ask a quick question, or share a bit of news, and while they are there, they reach for a handful of sweetness. It is part of cultivating a great customer experience, in this case, an internal one.

Here is why it works:

  1. An open door signals welcome. People can drop in without an appointment.
  2. There is an immediate treat. A moment of delight, no strings attached.
  3. It leaves a sweet memory. Literally and figuratively.

The real magic is not the candy. It is the conversations that happen because of it. The passerby who comes for chocolate and ends up sharing a challenge you can help solve. The colleague who reveals something personal, such as a child’s graduation or an aging parent’s struggle, and deepens your understanding of their world.

These moments create connection. They build trust. And trust is the foundation of strong leadership and real impact.

Sometimes, the simplest gestures open the biggest doors.

Some of the most telling signs of a culture’s health aren’t found in big meetings or formal reports, they surface in the quiet, everyday interactions. A breakfast buffet. A customer request. A team member asking for help.

When the reflex is to shut down instead of lean in, you see the cracks.

In my latest piece, I share a simple moment that exposed a bigger truth about how organizations can lose trust without even realizing it… and how to fix it.

Wisdom in Words

"Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory." -Dr. Seuss

TIP of the Week

Create an Open-Door moment

Find one small, consistent gesture that invites people in, a candy jar, a coffee pot, a bowl of fresh fruit, or even a rotating playlist of great music.

The goal is not the treat itself, but the space it creates for unplanned conversations. Those spontaneous connections often reveal needs you can meet, ideas you can build on, and trust you can strengthen.

Timeless Tides

I went to the beach this weekend, not just any beach, but the #1 beach in the US. It was perfect in every way. Perfect white sand, perfect waves, the perfect mix of people, and perfect facilities. What fascinated me most was how timeless the beach felt. Sitting there in our lounge chairs, under umbrellas, with the familiar coolers, surrounded by families with babies, teens, and aging parents, the scene could have been 2025, 2005, or 1995. The only giveaway was how our body shapes (and swimsuits) have changed over the decades.

The waves of the Atlantic roared with power one moment, then retreated into calm the next. The sky was a pure, endless blue, and the sun warmed everyone down to their souls. I have a ritual when I go to the beach: I sit in the sand at the water’s edge, close enough for the waves to splash me but not pull me in. From there, I look out to the horizon, watching people of all ages become children again, leaping over waves, getting knocked down, laughing freely.

Then I close my eyes, letting the rhythm of the waves imprint itself in my memory. The ocean recharges me like nothing else can. It is my happy place. It always has been, and it always will be.

What's your happy place? Where do you go to recharge, unwind, or be a child again? Tell me about it! Let's share and learn together.
