Hero Moment: A Wedding at Home
| |
|
This past Saturday, I attended a wedding unlike any I’d been to in decades. It wasn’t held in a ballroom or a country club. It took place at home, the groom’s home.
It wasn’t a mansion, just a warm, welcoming house large enough to hold six tables inside and a few more under the canopy outside. Somehow, it worked. With the help of a planner, the living room became the ceremony space, the dining area transformed into a dinner venue, and the backyard came alive under the soft glow of string lights.
There was nothing extravagant about it, yet it felt spectacular. Every detail was intentional: the refreshing fruit drinks, the tower of nut-stuffed dates resting over a three-tiered cake, the exquisite Moroccan entrees in chafing dishes, and the endless array of desserts that followed. The small touches made it magical, from faux candles flickering between white roses to green tulle sashes tied neatly on chairs, and delicate Turkish almonds wrapped in tulle waiting for guests to take home.
Yes, it was tight. But it functioned beautifully. Once the chairs were cleared, laughter filled the house and dancing took over. Guests moved freely between the living room and the yard, mingling under the night sky and savoring the moment.
What struck me most wasn’t the setup or the food; it was the family. They had the means to rent a venue, but they chose intimacy instead. They turned their home into a place of celebration, welcoming sixty or seventy friends and family into their personal space with warmth, humility, and pride. Everyone felt seen and cared for. The groom himself played host, greeting guests, making sure everyone was comfortable, and eating last. That simple act said everything.
It reminded me that the best experiences don’t need grandeur. They need presence. They need people who care enough to make others feel at home, even when the space is tight, the schedule imperfect, and the night unpredictable.
Because that’s what hospitality really is: the courage to open your doors, and your heart, and let joy fill the room.

The Power of the
Personal Touch
Automation and scale can make things efficient, but they can never make them human. The moments people remember most are the ones that feel personal, when someone takes an extra minute to connect, notice, or care.
This week, add one personal touch to your interactions. Write a quick thank-you note, check in with a colleague just to say you appreciate them, or follow up with a client to ask how something turned out.
It doesn’t have to be grand; it just has to be real. Those small gestures become the quiet threads that hold relationships, teams, and experiences together.

The Greg McKeown Podcast:
Interview with Matthew McConaughey
If you’re looking for something that feeds the soul this week, tune in to the Greg McKeown Podcast, episode 377 - “Poems, Prayers, and the Courage to Believe” with Matthew McConaughey.
In it, Matthew reads a series of reflective, rhyming poems, including a powerful piece called “What Are You Going to Do?” that asks what we do when life’s plans unravel, when pride fades, and when all that’s left is us.
It’s a reminder that self-reflection isn’t about regret, it’s about recalibration.

Inspiration Corner
Grandma's Garden
| |
There’s a little house on the corner of my neighborhood, the kind you notice even when you’re not trying to. Its garden is perfectly tended in every season, a tiered parade of perennials rising from low blooms to tall, confident color. Adirondack chairs wait patiently in the backyard. Whimsical statues of children, fairies, and frogs peek out between the flowers, like they’ve been there for generations.
Every detail changes with the time of year, a wreath on the door, a tiny flag in the grass, a shift in color palette that always feels just right. I walk past this house every day, and I look forward to it. It’s like taking a deep breath of beauty and order in a world that can feel a little chaotic.
I’ve never seen children there, and only once or twice have I caught a glimpse of her, the woman I’ve come to think of as Grandma. But I know she’s there. I can feel her presence in every trimmed hedge, every pruned stem, every thoughtful placement.
Her care extends beyond her yard. It lifts the whole block. She reminds me, reminds all of us, that beauty is an act of generosity. That even as we age, we can still create things that brighten the world.
Every time I walk by, I think this is what it means to be present. To nurture. To keep tending to life, no matter the season.
What moves you like that? Do you find anything in your routine as grounding? Tell me about it!
