Set Yourself Up to be the Hero

I’m on the road a lot. Hotels, airports, client sites, conference halls. Places where the unexpected loves to make an appearance. A spilled coffee before a keynote. Dead AirPods on a plane. Someone in a panic because their shirt button popped right before going on stage.

And in those moments, I’ve learned one thing: you’re either ready, or you’re racing to recover. And if it's you, you're either a hero or a zero.

Somewhere along the way, I became that person, the one who always has exactly what’s needed, right when the crisis hits. In my tote bag pictured above (which could probably double as a mobile command center), you’ll find:

  • A power bank, a multi-pronged charging cable, and a brick with two USB-C ports, because one dying battery can take down the whole day.
  • A wired headset, because when the AirPods give up, the show must go on.
  • A Tide stain stick, safety pins, and a mini sewing kit, small tools, big saves.
  • A wooden fan, because face it, sometimes you get hot, and this just works.
  • Glass-cleaning pads, mini scissors, and a skin salve that fixes everything from hangnails to heartbreak.
  • Nasal spray or BoomBoom pods, omega-3 trail mix, cough drops, gum, and a 4-oz glass bottle of water for quick resets.
  • A double-sided screwdriver (yes, really), and a mini stapler/tape set (because you just sometimes need this and it's no where close)
  • A pashmina, lighter than an umbrella, warmer than a jacket, and far more elegant.
  • A collapsible mini bag, because you never know when someone will need to carry the unexpected.
  • And always, $20 in singles, because no one ever has change when you actually need it.

That’s just the pocketbook. Let's not get into my mini-makeup bag, complete with EmergenC packets, a mini toothbrush/paste, etc.

But here’s the real story. I don’t carry all this because I’m obsessive. I carry it because it lets me be useful.

It’s not just about being prepared for myself, it’s about being prepared to serve. I can’t tell you how many times someone has looked down in horror at a coffee stain before a big meeting, and that little Tide stick turned panic into relief. Or when a fellow traveler’s charger failed mid-connection, and my extra cable saved their day (and their presentation).

These aren’t grand gestures. They’re micro-moments that matter, little hero moments that turn a zero day around.

It’s funny how something as simple as being ready can ripple outward. When you prepare for the unexpected, you’re really preparing to show up, calm, steady, and helpful, no matter what chaos finds you.

So here’s my two cents:

Your “bag of tricks” isn’t about stuff. It’s about stewardship. The tools just make it easier to do what you already do best, notice, care, and help.

Your turn, what’s in your bag of tricks? And maybe more importantly, who might it help next time? Tell me about it, let's learn together. And maybe I can help!

TIP of the Week

How to Pack like a Pro

Here’s my secret to packing: start from head to toe. Literally.

I think through what I’ll need as I move through my day... hat, glasses, toothbrush, toothpaste, moisturizer, Emergen-C (always). Then it’s scarf, raincoat, gloves (optional depending on the weather), outfits that mix and match, shoes, boots, and insoles for those marathon walking days. Then the tote/purse.

It never fails. The key is to visualize the day before you live it..

Because when you’re packed with intention, you don’t just travel lighter. You travel calmer.

Dr Kien Vuu- Upgrading the Human Operating System

Last week at the C-Vision International session, Dr. Kien Vuu (Vice President of Medical Intelligence at Shea Group) shared something that stuck with me: “Transformation efforts don’t fail in the code- they fail in the cognition, the physiology, the energy of the people who build and operate these systems.”

He described how our brains run in two modes. The default mode, which loops on threats, pressure, and control- perfect for survival, terrible for creativity. And the executive mode, where clarity, empathy, and innovation live. The key is learning to regulate under pressure, to shift from survival to performance.

His message couldn’t have been more timely. We often talk about upgrading our technology, but how often do we upgrade ourselves? Preparing for the unexpected isn’t just about having the right tools in our tote bag. It’s about strengthening our human operating system- our mindset, energy, and ability to stay present when things get messy.

As Dr. Vuu said near the end, “The future isn’t AI versus humans. It’s aligned intelligence.” The more we ground and regulate ourselves, the better everything around us works- from our devices to our decisions.

Hold On- Pain Ends

If you ever need proof that persistence pays off, let me tell you about my three-month saga with Microsoft.

Back in August, I opened a support ticket for what seemed like a small problem. My Outlook calendar invites would not save because the default signature, which included images, kept breaking the process. That tiny glitch turned into a monster. It messed with my Zoom plugin, duplicated invites, and even spammed my recipients without my knowledge. I spent weeks deleting messes I did not make, apologizing for the chaos, and enduring one failed “fix” after another.

Seven calls, four escalations, and three screen-share sessions later, I was just about done. But I kept at it. Every new technician meant starting over, every workaround felt like déjà vu, and still, I did not give up.

Then, this past Friday, after a long day, I saw a call come through from Microsoft Support. On instinct, I picked up. The technician had me run a long-overdue update, and when it finished, everything worked. Both problems were gone. Just like that.

It was not the dramatic ending I expected, but it was the one I needed. It reminded me that resolution often hides inside repetition. You keep showing up, even when it feels pointless, because sometimes the breakthrough is already in motion. You just have not seen it yet.

So here is my reminder for anyone feeling stuck in a loop, waiting for something to finally work:

HOPE stands for: Hold On, Pain Ends.

Because whether it is software or life, the update always arrives eventually.

What's something or some problem that's been nagging you all year? What's a step you can take in the direction of fixing it, for good? Tell me about it!
