There is a quiet magic in writing things down. The moment a wish becomes words, it shifts. It grows legs. It becomes direction. And direction, when nurtured with intention, becomes reality. People often say seeing is believing, but the truth is believing is seeing. Belief moves first. Evidence follows. And belief becomes real the moment you give it language.
As the year winds down, I always return to a simple practice that has shaped both my personal world and every team I have ever led. It started in little note pads, then moved to OneNote, and eventually lived in the notepad on my phone. Between late November and mid December (some call this "No-Cember",) I pause long enough to take meaningful stock of the year: the good, the great, and the misses. Then I shift to what the upcoming year must become. Not what I hope for. Not the “maybe someday” list. What must be true. What milestones matter. What needs to move from wish to action.
And then I name the year.
One year it was the year of clarity. Another, the year of energy. Another, the year of healing. Each theme became a north star woven into my daily routines. It showed up in file names, calendars, even in passwords. A single word, quietly anchoring who I was becoming. When I brought this practice into my corporate world, teams loved it. It gave our goals heart. It made direction memorable. One of our most powerful themes was the year of fix what’s broken. We took every ignored ankle biter and moved it to the top of the list. And we fixed them. All of them. It transformed everything.
And here’s the beautiful part.
This is a fun alternative to stiff goal setting and the traditional mission, vision, values exercise that people glaze over. Humans crave things that are simple, easy, memorable. A theme gives them that. It naturally pulls people forward because it taps into something deeper than structure. It taps into attraction. It taps into belief. It taps into possibility. It is, at its core, the law of attraction in motion. What you name, you notice. What you notice, you nurture. And what you nurture, grows.
So here is the RECIPE to turn next year from a wish into a reality:
1. Look back before you look forward. Acknowledge the good, the great, and the misses.
2. Decide what next year must be. Focus on the non negotiables, not the maybes.
3. Name your theme. One word that captures the heart of what you need.
4. Prioritize the hard things first. Growth usually hides behind the biggest resistance.
5. Reinforce the theme everywhere. Write it, see it, use it. Let it become familiar.
6. Let belief come before evidence. Trust what you cannot see yet.
7. Share the theme with your team or family. Alignment multiplies momentum.
Hero moments rarely happen by chance. They are designed. First in your mind, then in your words, and eventually in your world. So go ahead. Write the story you want to live. Name your next chapter. Believe it into existence.
